Im Federal Register der USA wurde ein Vorschlag des Department of Homeland Security und der Grenzschutzbehörde CBP veröffentlicht: Künftig sollen Touristen aus 42 visumfreien Staaten über das ESTA-System ihre Social-Media-Aktivitäten der letzten fünf Jahre offenlegen. Offiziell wird dies als Beitrag zur Sicherheit verkauft, doch der politische Kontext zeigt ein anderes Bild. Seit Trumps Rückkehr ins Weiße Haus werden Studierende, Arbeitsmigranten und Visa-Antragsteller systematisch auf „anti-amerikanische“ Ansichten geprüft. Nun soll diese digitale Gesinnungskontrolle auf den Tourismus ausgeweitet werden – einschließlich der Abfrage von Telefonnummern, E-Mail-Adressen und biometrischen Daten. Ausgerechnet vor der Fußball-WM 2026 und den Olympischen Spielen 2028 schafft die Regierung Hürden, die bereits jetzt zu sinkenden Besucherzahlen führen. Menschenrechtsorganisationen warnen vor globaler Selbstzensur, und Gruppen wie FIRE, die Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, sehen einen Angriff auf die Tradition freier Rede. Am Ende geht es weniger um Sicherheit als um politische Kontrolle: Die Grenze der USA wird zur Grenze des erlaubten Denkens.
