I’ve noticed a phenomenon in the reading of the Śrī Bṛhad-bhāgavatāmṛta, of which I’ve marked a couple of verses that I want to read to you to make my point. I found that in the first reading that I ever heard of Bṛhad-bhāgavatāmṛta, which was with a group of godbrothers and godsisters, there’s a section in which Gopa-kumāra goes back home, back to Godhead. We are interested that when he reaches Goloka Vṛndāvana, it looks the same as Gokula Vraja. We are interested to hear of the characteristics of the people there—that they are in ecstasy. It’s in the afternoon, or late afternoon. Kṛṣṇa had gone to the forest to tend cows, and he comes back, and upon his return, there’s a clamor in Vṛndāvana. People had been practically comatose during his absence, but then there are signs—there is a cloud coming from the dust of the hooves of the calves, and Kṛṣṇa, returning from the forest and all the residents of Vṛndāvana have come alive, and they’re waiting, awaiting Kṛṣṇa coming back into the village. When he comes into the clearing and he sees Gopa-kumāra there, Kṛṣṇa runs forward and he embraces Gopa-kumāra, and Kṛṣṇa faints out of ecstasy for seeing his devotee. This is the revelation from this section of the Bṛhad-bhāgavatāmṛta. I will read a couple of verses before the one I want to point out to you. This is Gopa-kumāra noticing Kṛṣṇa’s beauty. But even that isn’t the point. We know Kṛṣṇa is beautiful; we know Goloka Vṛndāvana is made of cintāmaṇi stone, but that’s not what evokes the ecstasy, he says: "His lotus eyes beamed with a merciful glance, and the varied assets of beauty decorated him in a singular way. The fingers of his lotus hand busily pushed back the locks of his hair, which flew about, adorned with the dust raised by the cows"—see, he’s just come into the vision of Gopa-kumāra for the first time, seeing him in Goloka—"His tender, divine lotus feet touched the surface of the earth just to grant her the gift of supreme splendor. Playfully dancing as they moved, they attracted everyone’s heart with their great eagerness to walk quickly with large steps. The effulgence of his cloud-colored body, shining with the full sweetness of youth, lit up all corners of the sky. His beauty, which captured the hearts of the ever-dear devotees of Vraja, was an ocean abounding with countless excellences. He leaped forward and came close to me, compelled by the affection of his helpless devotee. I fainted in love at seeing him. He caught hold of me by the neck, and suddenly he too fell to the ground." And here’s Sanātana Gosvāmī’s commentary on that verse. It’s short: "Gopa-kumāra was already aware, at least theoretically, that Kṛṣṇa is very affectionate to his helpless devotees, but now he learned that Kṛṣṇa had affection specifically for him. Merely seeing Kṛṣṇa was enough to utterly enchant Gopa-kumāra, but this new discovery pushed him toward the limit of ecstasy." So my point here is: what every soul is looking for is recognition. We find even in modern psychology there are those who point out in raising a child, the child doesn’t cry because he wants to survive; the child cries because he wants his mother to come and recognize him. And this is a theme we could take from Bhagavad-gītā.
