We are continuing our reading of the pastimes of Rathayātrā, because we've been given the facility by the Śrī Guru-paramparā, and therefore our participation in hearing is rightly done. śṛṇvatāṁ sva-kathāḥ kṛṣṇaḥ puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtanaḥ hṛdy antaḥ stho hy abhadrāṇi vidhunoti suhṛt satām (SB 1.2.17) Simply by hearing about Kṛṣṇa's unlimited pastimes, one will have a change of heart. The human body is specifically designed to hear about Kṛṣṇa, and we have God-given intelligence, so that we can enter deeply within the pastimes, and we can also transfer ourselves from this realm—which is a little rocky, to say the least—back to the spiritual realm. We can also develop the wherewithal to explain the process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness to others simply by hearing. No other education is necessary except for hearing and hearing and hearing more. Everything else takes place from the inside out. We want to counteract that, and we want to smash Kali-yuga. It's very practical to distribute literature because nobody can take it back once the book goes out there. Let's do damage to Kali-yuga by getting out the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, so it's everywhere, and people who run into it end up changing their lives and their trajectory in life, in going back home, back to Godhead. This was Prabhupāda's vision. We can enter deeply within it and take it up as our own, and in that way, we'll be following in his footsteps and the footsteps of the great ācāryas, and that is the way to make advancement. śuśrūṣoḥ śraddadhānasya vāsudeva-kathā-ruciḥ syān mahat-sevayā viprāḥ puṇya-tīrtha-niṣevaṇāt (SB 1.2.16) It's great service. If we take it up and have something tangible to offer to Śrīla Prabhupāda, then I guarantee you, all of us will be dancing in ecstasy together in a kīrtana to celebrate the fact that we did something together that is unassailable, that is perfectly aligned, and that it will bring joy to the heart of Śrīla Prabhupāda. He promised the devotees who had worked on the Caitanya-caritāmṛta marathon to produce the entire set of Ccs within a couple of months that they would go back to Godhead. He promised them in writing, and he said at the end, he guaranteed they would. So we could leave at any minute. There's no guarantee we're going to live for five more seconds. Let's put our energy into this and astound the world and astound ourselves by hitting this goal, smashing 100,008. Every set counts. It's never too late. Even the last day makes a difference. But start now. Lean into it. Talk about it. Advocate for it, and keep the number visible! We have enough intelligence as humans to speak, and that's way above what primates can do; and if we use that speech to pronounce the supreme combination of syllables, that's enough to become liberated. You don't have to pay $100,000 a year tuition for four years at Reed College to figure it all out. You can figure it out by reading the Bhagavad-gītā, and if you take advantage of it from whatever situation of life you are in—even if you're illiterate—if you pronounce those syllables and do it so intentionally, understanding that it's connection with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, then this is what all the śāstras are pointing to, and it's the prime teaching of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Just by that process, one attains perfection of life. So we can concentrate on that. Humans get free speech, as in it's thrown in for free when you are born. You don't have to figure it out so much. Just happens. Then, if you use your God-given intelligence to understand, there's this supreme combination of syllables—which is what we subscribe to, that theory—and you learn to perfect it by chanting it with your heart as a means to reciprocate with the Supreme, then you'll attain perfection of life. Amusing, entertaining, and enjoyable—going on book distribution is all those things. It's definitely entertaining and enjoyable. But here is the key: when people feel hesitant to go on book distribution, oftentimes it's an imaginary scenario that it might be tricky when they get out there. The reason I notice many people hesitate to go out on book distribution, is because they think they have to perform, and they think everyone's going to be watching them. And if they don't perform, if they don't sell a book, then what'll they say when they get home? "I'll be regarded as a failure for the rest of my life." Is anybody thinking like that? Yes? No? Very good to be vulnerable and honest. I notice when I give seminars about how to distribute books, it's not that hard. But the part of the seminar where I teach how to distribute books starts with showing people why they might think about it and also how to do it in a few simple steps. But then, when it comes to actually walking out the door, a lot of people tell me that they just got a phone call from their mom who needs a peanut butter and jelly sandwich—and it's an emergency, and they have to go home. Otherwise, they would come out with us on book distribution. Poor Mom! Expectation is the mother of disappointment. So, what I have taken to doing before we all go out on book distribution is telling devotees that they're forbidden to distribute any books. We don't want anybody distributing any books, especially their first time. They're just going out to observe and see what it feels like to walk out the door. That's the first step. Therefore, we have this ritual which is called "Touching the Pavement." No distribution of books—just see how you feel walking out the door, and then if you have to go to the place where we were planning on distributing, you go there and you just touch the pavement. So, we have many photographs from around the world of groups of devotees going out, and we just have our foot on the pavement. And once you touch the pavement, you're done for the day; you don't have to do anything else. Since I started advocating for that, lots and lots of people come out to take the first step. Because when we expect something of ourselves and we are not sure if we're able to attain it, then we might hesitate. So, one of the ways to take that hesitation away is to change your expectation. Have no expectation at all of whether you are going to sell a book or not. Don't go out for that reason—to impress somebody, to impress yourself, or to see if you can do it. Just go out to see what it feels like. In fact, if you think about what Prabhupāda felt like when he got on the Jaladūta, and you think, "Well, I don't have a Jaladūta I can get on, but at least I can try this and feel the exhilaration of walking out the door and just seeing how I feel if I was going to distribute books." We are exploring the depths of Ratha-yātrā. It's an ocean. We are trying to go beneath the surface by hearing about the pastimes of Rathyatra and discussing them. When we do such things, then when we attend the Ratha-yātrā, we'll find a special impetus. When you show up for the chanting, sincerely call out to Kṛṣṇa, and when one feels something for Kṛṣṇa, then the mind is automatically conquered. This is natural. It's not unnatural. It's not the kind of control or mastery over the mind that some yogi does by controlling the breath without going into the incoming, but rather, it's reconnecting with our natural dependence on Kṛṣṇa as His eternal servant, and when we feel that, and it's reality— "sa nityo nitya-sambandhaḥ prakṛtiś ca paraiva sā." Sri Brahma-samhita (5.28) says we have this eternal kinship with Kṛṣṇa. It's not something we're adding, but when we feel that sincerely, then there is a sense of—there's an upsurge in our body. I'm not saying, you know, it has to be dramatic, but you feel it yourself, you'll notice that your mind is automatically controlled because you become enthralled with the idea that I have a connection with Kṛṣṇa. We are in the stage of preparation for Rathayātrā. What's more, using this lifetime to enter into the mood of Kṛṣṇa consciousness as given to us by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Kṛṣṇa is coming to experience the highest mode of worshiping Himself, as taught by Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. The reading that I'll be doing today is from the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, canto 10, chapter 82. One may ask, what does this have to do with Rathayātrā? The answer is that this is the origin of Rathayātrā. Rathayātrā is the coming together of Kṛṣṇa and the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana, after over 100 years of separation. As we know, Kṛṣṇa left Vṛndāvana and said he would soon be back, and that left the residents of Vṛndāvana pining for Him for over 100 years without stoppage. And then there was finally an opportunity to meet at Kurukṣetra because, on the pretense of going there for a religious ceremony, Kṛṣṇa took all of His soldiers, and people came from all over the universe to see Kṛṣṇa there. What an opportunity to meet Him there! When the residents of Vṛndāvana found out about it, they also loaded up their wagons and they came to Kurukṣetra. So we'll read this chapter. We'll see if we can get through the whole thing in an hour, and then there is a parallel chapter in the Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā, which is about the Lord's dancing at Rathayātrā. Now, Caitanya Mahāprabhu is reenacting this pastime from the 82nd chapter of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam when He dances at Rathayātrā. For us to know the inside mood of Rathayātrā means that when we see Lord Jagannātha, pull the cart, and do sevā for Lord Jagannātha, we'll be able to remember Him in this context. Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad-gītā(8.16),"ā-brahma-bhuvanāl lokāḥ punar āvartino ’rjuna." You don't want to stay here because it doesn't matter where you are in the material world—high, low, middle—it's all bad categorically. You can just assume that. But if you can change your consciousness, this is a very important part according to our International Society for Kṛṣṇa Consciousness, then, Kṛṣṇa says in the beginning of the eighth chapter that you can point yourself towards the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Or when you leave this body, be ready to completely leave the categorically inconvenient material world and go back home, back to Godhead. In the ninth chapter, He says (BG 9.25): yānti deva-vratā devān pitṝn yānti pitṛ-vratāḥ | bhūtāni yānti bhūtejyā yānti mad-yājino ’pi mām || Which basically means: You have free will. Use it. Chop, chop, little jīva. Let's go. Get out of here. The place is condemned. Just get out. Go, back to Godhead. And then, very specifically, He says: "anta-kāle ca mām eva smaran muktvā kalevaram." That if at the end (anta-kāle) you remember Me, then you'll directly come to Me. And then He says (BG 8.6): yaṁ yaṁ vāpi smaran bhāvaṁ tyajaty ante kalevaram | taṁ tam evaiti kaunteya sadā tad-bhāva-bhāvitaḥ || If you get entangled in some other kind of consciousness, that's where you're going to end up. So He's not a religious fanatic. Kṛṣṇa is just telling: Here is how it works. Here is where you are. Here's the context. Now, use it. Figure it out for yourself. And similarly, the people walking around London—I was observing them as we were driving in here. They're walking all at the same pace. This is morning pace on a weekday. You've got to kind of be a little stern, and you've got to kind of walk fast, because you've got to get in there and do your job. It's a prison sentence. When we're able to give people information: yathaidhāṁsi samiddho ’gnir bhasma-sāt kurute ’rjuna jñānāgniḥ sarva-karmāṇi bhasma-sāt kurute tathā || (BG 4.37) You give somebody this fire of knowledge, and they are able to burn to ashes all of their karma. Karma means what's driving people to walk to work and go to certain realms of the material world. They are pushed into it. It's like, "Get in there, buddy. You have to stay there." But you can liberate them by giving them an opportunity to understand the philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, to come in contact with devotees, and then we win. Yay! Back home, back to Godhead. Time is destructive for those who don't take advantage of it. This is mentioned in the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, also, as far as spiritual practice goes, and we'll get into that a little later. When you take advantage of each day to the best of your ability, then you are banking something important. But every day you forget to do it, or you put it off, then it's a day when you are losing ground, your intention for that—whatever that may be. The arrival of the intention comes, the delay enters, and then you see the curve starts to move to the right, or continues to move to the right, reaches its peak, and there we have it at number three (referring to a picture in the presentation), alternatives multiply. Many other things come in. Kṛṣṇa says this in the Bhagavad Gīta (BG 2.41): vyavasāyātmikā buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana bahu-śākhā hy anantāś ca buddhayo 'vyavasāyinām That is, if you don't act on your intention when it's there, then your intelligence can become many-branched. You get other ideas, other distractions, other roads to go on, and you can't be ekeha—one-minded. Then it starts to go down. Your conviction to do it weakens. You think, "Oh, maybe it was just sentiment. Maybe it wasn't a good idea after all." And then the opportunity closes. I didn't tell you this, but I looked at the word "dwindle," and it sheets back to Germanic. The linguists say it comes from Proto-Indo-European, from a word that means to die. Dwindle, dwin—that the first part with the 'd' comes from a word in Proto-Indo-European which means something dies. Like a fruit. You leave it on the vine too long: you miss the opportunity, and then the fruit dwindles, and dies. We have to take responsibility. Like Anapāyinī, wherever she is in the temple, once she knows kīrtana is starting, you see her come trotting in. She takes her service seriously. She comes whenever she knows Prabhu is going to be doing kīrtana. That's dedication, and you make advancement that way when you take responsibility for a service. So, how do we stay persistent? I found that when I've taken responsibility for a service, and I take it to heart, no matter what—unless I can't get up out of bed because I'm sick or something like that—I do it. When you take that responsibility, you show up, whatever the consequences are. I mean, of course, there are always health reasons or things come up, but on a day-to-day basis, take responsibility. When we take responsibility for a service, that's what we mean when we say, "Your sevā will save you," because you have got to be there. If you have children, you can't say, "Um, not going to do it today." Imagine what your house would look like! So that doesn't work. Sign up, take some responsibility, and then you get rewarded by Kṛṣṇa for that, in the best sense. It's not a fruitive kind of thing; Kṛṣṇa reciprocates because He sees that we are determined. We are showing up, even if times are tough, even if we don't want to. We show up and we take on that responsibility. Mindfulness can be helpful, but ultimately the mind seeks some positive engagement. According to the Vedic process, which is what we follow, there are various categories of philosophy under a sage named Dvaipāyana Vyāsadeva. We follow the Vedic process, which can be understood in the summary study of all the Vedas, called the Bhagavad-gītā. Therein is a hint of the best way to engage the mind, which is in relationship—not emptying the mind, or not just stilling the mind, but engaging the mind in a relationship. We may note that throughout human and even animal society, living beings have a vested interest in relationships. You can notice butterflies, even after they are born, consorting with one another. Birds are famous for building a little love nest; they work together, the male and female bird, to pick up straw and build a nest. Humans, you can see, going to and from Home Depot doing something similar. But the point there is not to build something, but to have a place where one can be in relationship. So, in the process of bhakti-yoga—or I could say, the great teacher of bhakti-yoga, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu laid out the tenets of bhakti-yoga that we follow even today. He pointed out that the Bhagavad-gītā and the other explanations of the Vedas, the consolidation or the essentialization of the Vedas in the Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, point us towards the highest form of engagement of the mind, which is called devotional service. It's underlying principle is that we all have a loving propensity. When the mind is absorbed in the idea of service out of love, then it's completely satisfied. All other states leave us wanting, and those other states are not stable; they may shift from one point to another. There is a word that comes from Latin: "enthralment." "En" means "in," and "thrall" means "to be imprisoned." When we say we are enthralled by something, we are utterly captured by it. In the positive sense of that imprisonment, there's a way in which the mind can be captured. Another word that expresses a similar concept is "rapture," which means to be fully absorbed in a topic. Well, the Bhagavad-gītā and the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam point out that we are most interested in love and loving relationships. Therefore, in the essentialization of the process of bhakti-yoga, there is a system by which we can express that loving emotion that we have and connect with the object of love that is unlimitedly satisfying. Patañjali Muni, who thousands of years ago wrote a book on psychology and how it relates to the manifestations that we have in our lives, mentions that when we leave this present physical body, the material nature then interprets all of the impressions we have in our mind and the overall feeling that we have when we leave this world. It then fills it in and gives us a new physical, gross body accordingly. And this is described in detail in the eighth and 15th chapters of the Bhagavad Gītā, where the kind of nose—notice, you have a particular kind of nose; you might not have noticed it recently—or a certain kind of ear or eyes [is determined]. Your eyes are different from a fruit fly's eyes. I looked at a magnification of a fruit fly because I was talking about how cute they are the other day, but then when I looked at the magnification, I thought, "It's not as cute as I thought." But in any case, fruit flies have specific eyes that were given to them by the material nature as an accommodation. We have a particular kind of eye; so, one may then ask, "Well, why did I get this particular kind of eye—a set of eyes?" These wisdom literatures answer that it's an accommodation of our consciousness. It's a way that we've developed our consciousness; the way in which we've developed our consciousness is then filled in. So, it's as if you made an impression with your foot in the wet sand and then filled it in with plaster of Paris—you get a perfect rendering of your foot. And in a similar way, our consciousness is what carries us or attracts to us our next physical body. This all goes to say that we're always in the creative process, and we're a lot more creative and powerful than we know. We may turn off that system and forget to create, and just let things happen to us and just take in random information. So, I am taking from this point of Leonardo da Vinci: he had an idea, he conceived of it, he was creative—and how did he express his creative nature? He would write it down for posterity, and then it became manifest as a useful tool. So, how many ways are we creating our next body or whatever is in our environment? It's called ātmakṛtam; it's what we are doing. So, this is a refined way, or a way of refining how we move in the world by being very deliberate and writing things down. This is what I'm trying to present: one of the ways of being very conscious about what we're thinking and where our mind is going, and also going in a predetermined direction—the way we want to go—by writing it down. So, that comes to also writing goals, priorities, and so forth. For instance, I have always in front of me on my desk a list of all my priorities, and they're always ready at hand because in a 24-hour period I can forget my priorities. But because I've taken my intentions, I've written them down very clearly, and I have a list now. I can go through and review and recall them, and stay on track. So, I'm saying that this is a manifestation tool.

Some people are highly intellectual and they have intelligence, but it can be easily misused by speculating. If you follow Kṛṣṇa by hearing Bhagavad Gītā, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and taking the advice of the ācāryas, it’s descending mercy, because the order that comes down from Kṛṣṇa through the disciplic succession is non-different from Kṛṣṇa. Simple act— chanting Kṛṣṇa’s names. It makes complete sense because everything has an origin—janmādy asya yataḥ—and that origin is personal. If you find out the name of the person from whom everything else emanates, and you worship that name according to Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, then you’ll be directly in contact with Him. In fact, 'āsyenedam upāsya so ‘pi hi sadānandāmbudhau majjati' (Śrī Nāmāṣṭaka - 6). Rūpa Gosvāmī says, "Just use your mouth; use it as an instrument, and upāsya." Upāsya means to come closer. It means worship, but worship—actually, what it means literally—is that you become intimately connected with that person. So, this is the best of all religious processes because it’s directly connecting us with Kṛṣṇa. It’s a natural impulse to call out to those that we feel grateful to, that we want to serve, and that we are impressed by. So, take the process; keep doing it. I’m really impressed with all of you. You come here every single time, and every morning take time to chant, despite the fact that you have such busy lives. It’s inordinate; that’s part of being in Kali-yuga. But don’t worry, because the holy name will win: 'paraṁ vijayate śrī-kṛṣṇa-saṅkīrtanam.' Keep doing this, and give it to many more people. Teach them how to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. If you are a human being and you read the Bhagavad-gītā, then you’re doing the right thing. If you are a human being and you don’t read the Bhagavad-gītā, then you’re missing the greatest opportunity, because there’s nothing better than the Bhagavad-gītā, and not many people read it. They just say they read it, or they keep it in their house and say, “We believe in the Bhagavad-gītā.” But the trick is to actually read it. I was on a Zoom call earlier with a bunch of kids, and we have this system where, whenever we have our call, we always read a chapter of the Bhagavad-gītā together—Sanskrit and English—and then we discuss some of the purports, and the effect is amazing every time you read it. When I was in London, because we were zipping around here, there, and everywhere, every time we would jump in the car, I’d pull out my phone and open my Bhagavad-gītā app, and I started reading chapters. And so I had a minimum of three chapters a day of hearing the Bhagavad-gītā, and nobody told me to stop. Because people could have got annoyed in the cars, like, “Here he goes again,” but nobody said that because it’s so interesting to hear the Bhagavad-gītā. I remember when I first got a Bhagavad-gītā when I was a kid; it was just translations, and I couldn’t wait to get home from school and read the Bhagavad-gītā again. And I know from that very beginning of reading the Bhagavad-gītā that it fortifies you. Now we have Bhagavad-gītā As It Is. Last year, as an international society ISKCON, we sold over 5 million Bhagavad-gītās. But I can tell you what Prabhupāda would say, because he said it to us in San Francisco in 1973 when our temple president introduced us. Prabhupāda said, “These guys sold this many books.” You know what Prabhupāda said? “You must also read my books.” He said, “I’ve not written these just for selling." We have to read the Bhagavad-gītā. We have to be up on the Bhagavad-gītā. When your mind’s tricking you, it means you’re not reading enough Bhagavad-gītā. That is what it means. If you read at least a chapter of the Bhagavad-gītā a day—or at least a verse, anyway—then you won’t get tricked. You won’t get fooled again. The old boss, same as the new boss; it just comes in over and over again—same old trick of Māyā. But you can’t get tricked if you read the Bhagavad-gītā. In fact, you can tell people that out on the street: “You won’t get fooled again if you take this Bhagavad-gītā and read it every day.” So that’s the solution to everything. Where’s your Bhagavad-gītā? Do you know where it is right now? (one of the ladies in the audience takes out Bhagavad-gītā from her purse) In your purse? Show it. Show the Bhagavad-gītā. Look at her tilaka—she’s not bewildered, she’s not tricked by Māyā. She gets up, puts her tilaka on, because she has a Bhagavad-gītā. If you carry a Bhagavad-gītā with you wherever you go and you read it every day, you’ll never get tricked by Māyā. That’s how to trick Māyā back. Prabhupāda said, “You should defeat death before death defeats you.” So it’s a race for time. We don’t have much time. If the baby says māmā, dādā, pitā, or ammā, the parents go crazy! They say, “He said my name! She said my name!” They will record it on video and play it over and over and over again. This is the real meaning behind the idea of "service with the tongue." What Kṛṣṇa wants is our love. Just as parents want the love of their baby—where at first, it seems like the baby is just crying and wanting attention, and the parents give all their attention because they are so attached. When the baby finally gives something back, the simplest thing they can offer is just recognizing them and saying, “Māmā,"then, the parents' hearts melt. To them, that is the best service the baby could ever give—better than anything else they could do in their entire life. It is simply the baby recognizing, "Here is the one taking care of me." This is exactly what service is when we chant to Kṛṣṇa. When we recognize, “Kṛṣṇa, You are my mother, You are my father, You are everything to me,” that is the real connection. Remember: this is a deeply heartfelt, personal process. It is not mechanical. It is not about merging into some impersonal light. It is entirely personal. We are persons, and Kṛṣṇa is a person. He loves us and wants us to come back to Him. Śrīla Prabhupāda writes in his purport to the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (1.2.17) on the verse śṛṇvatāṁ sva-kathāḥ kṛṣṇaḥ: "Kṛṣṇa wants us to come back to Him even more than we can desire to go back to Him." So, think of yourself as a baby calling out to your mother. That is the deepest connection and service you can perform. It is just acknowledging that He is there, and saying, “Kṛṣṇa, I only want You.” Just imagine how His heart melts for you personally. It is not just a general thing where, "Oh, He likes everybody," He specifically likes you. I gave a class on this in London recently. In a section of the Bṛhad-bhāgavatāmṛta, when Gopa-kumāra finally goes back to Godhead, he mentions that when he met Kṛṣṇa, he initially thought, "Well, yes, Kṛṣṇa loves all living entities—you can say that." But then he realized, "Oh, He specifically cares for me." That is when his heart truly melted. That lack of personal connection is what vexes everybody in the material world. Everyone thinks, "God is against me. Nobody likes me." People are not even sure if their own parents like them! It is a deep psychological anomaly we are all stuck in. But when you experience that genuine reconnection with Kṛṣṇa, then your japa becomes absolutely essential. You cannot do without it. It stops being a mechanical process. It becomes real—the genuine, urgent yearning of the soul for what we have lost: our awareness of Kṛṣṇa's intense love for us. Prabhupāda said Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura was very powerful, and he has been one of the ācāryas that has given us his special mercy here. I had hoped to have ready for today a poster that we made in Los Angeles. Somebody had designed it there, circa 2007, when we started our monthly saṅkīrtana festivals. I had the poster on my wall for a long time, and then my painter accidentally knocked it off the wall, and it got a little scuffed. So I found a place in San Francisco that could retouch it—that is, digitally scan it and then retouch it, which they did. He has picked it up again, and they have a digital copy also. It has a picture of Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura sitting with books on his lap, and it is reminiscent of the era in which we started our massive book distribution, or at least our regular sorties going out into public to distribute books, which has grown over the years. And we rallied around this day, the day of Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura’s disappearance, because we felt that Śrīla Prabhupāda had evidence of when, during that year—I mentioned in 1975, when he was on his morning walk and coming back to the temple. This was in Māyāpura and around the area there were no other dwellings; there were only rice fields and the temple, that was it; that’s all you could see. So you could see Prabhupāda walking with the devotees out in the field, and then he would come back from his morning walk, and we greeted him with a kīrtana each morning. One morning, somebody had noted that this is fulfilling Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura’s vision, and that they have all come here. Somebody said to Prabhupāda, and Prabhupāda said, “By his mercy they could be delivered. May Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura deliver all of them.” So, Prabhupāda was very aware of the fact that we are in the Bhaktivinoda parivāra; it’s his greater family of Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura. It was this vision that was enacted by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta, and our Śrīla Prabhupāda had followed in the footsteps of both of them and practically actualized the dream of Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura. So imagine how pleased he must be to see all of us engaged in saṅkīrtana, in spreading the holy name of the Lord, and distributing Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Devotional service is not affected by the modes of material nature, but this verse gives an analogy that we can relate to: that when we are properly prepared, then it can conflagrate. It comes as a small spark, but if a spark—Prabhupāda says—lands on bare ground, it won't start a fire. But if it lands on dry grass, then it'll burn. Kṛṣṇa says in the Gītā (BG 7.28): yeṣāṁ tv antagataṁ pāpaṁ janānāṁ puṇya-karmaṇām te dvandva-moha-nirmuktā bhajante māṁ dṛḍha-vratāḥ When one is solidly situated in the mode of goodness, then when the spark of bhakti touches one, you'll notice that they immediately become activated in the process, and they can come to that level very quickly. All forms of bhakti are permanent. We find that they are never lost, even in the cases where they land in somebody who is not yet prepared to take to bhakti. But when they do prepare themselves after they have received that, then progressively they'll be able to increase the level of bhakti that they practice. Therefore, it's mentioned by Kapila-deva: the levels of preparedness—the bhakti is there, but it gets expressed through the mode of ignorance, through the mode of passion, through the mode of goodness, and then when it's transcendental, it breaks free and has its own symptoms—avyavahitā. It's mentioned in that verse that if one even one time hears, then one becomes attracted. So that's the case when somebody's purified. And it is an aspect of devotional service that Kṛṣṇa recommends himself: that we should cultivate the mode of goodness very deliberately in all that we do. He names in the Eleventh Canto ten ways in which, as samples, we should interact with the world in sattva. The mind, unless trained to take special care when chanting, will take interest in many other things. Rūpa Gosvāmī says boys are naturally interested in girls. Girls are naturally interested in boys. People are naturally interested in money; they think of it all the time. They look at it on the screen: "That's how much money I have." So, this yoga process is taking interest in Kṛṣṇa. And the most interesting thing is that Kṛṣṇa comes in sound vibration, and we can take an interest in the sound itself because it's non different from Kṛṣṇa. That's where all the progress takes place—when you take special care to listen. In Latin, interest means "it is important." So, we think so many things are important, but the yogi—the Bhakti yogi—thinks only the holy name is important; everything else comes from that. You are showing that by showing up to programs like these. It may seem like a little thing, but it's not. The fulcrum of all power is to take special time and practice coming back to the holy name again and again. One quick tip that Prabhupada gave about chanting Japa. He said, "bypass the mind." Just go straight from the lips to the ears. You don't have to consider anything, nor should you notice your mind going here and there because it's only a direct relationship between the sound and you are listening to it. My wife, for 40 years, has exceptional qualities. One of them is that she's naturally averse to things that aren't related to Kṛṣṇa, and that's been a great benefit for me. Living with you, for all these years, the subject that you're interested in is Kṛṣṇa. I also notice that you have a kind of determination—I would even say stubbornness. Definitely stubborn; the most stubborn person I ever met! But you engage it in service to Prabhupāda, because you're so stubborn that you won't give up the principles that he gave us, nor will you give up your allegiance to Prabhupāda. I have noticed that some people equivocate and say maybe he's this or that, but Nirākulā doesn't want to hear it. She is attached to Prabhupāda. I also noticed that she's a very organized person. She ran her own business for many, many years and was always on time. People knew her; in fact, even the clients that she had, who are numerous, still call her, write her, and send her stuff, even though she is fully retired now. They always think of her as somebody who is a very positive influence in their life, and I think of you as being a positive influence in my life—the most positive I can say. Because, you know, when you're married—just FYI for anybody who doesn't know—you have to be with a person all the time, and you get to know them quite well. I can say that it has been a boon for me, because having someone who's unwavering in her practice of Kṛṣṇa consciousness also keeps me steady. We're affected by our association. I'm grateful because today is your birthday. In case anybody wondered if I was just suddenly, after 40 years, deciding it was important to mention my gratitude to you for the unlimited ways in which you support me. Well, we decided early on, even when we met and the question came up about whether this was a match and we were going to get married, that we would talk about our path in devotional service. We decided we were going to go for it together, we were going to work hard and try to do service for Prabhupāda, and in the end, whatever needs to be done, we're going to do it to go back home, back to Godhead, to help each other. Everything begins with hearing and chanting. When devotees take to the practice and make vows, there is a feeling of exhilaration because we have unlimited potential. There may be times at which we feel waylaid by our own mind, senses, or other occupational obligations, and therefore it's helpful to come back to remember what the horse is and what the cart is, and always put the horse before the cart. For instance, there are ways of fading away from good chanting, there are ways of fading away from reading and hearing Prabhupāda's books because there are pressing matters in life, and they can then take precedence over time. And then we may put off our chanting, or we may put off hearing from the Śāstras for the sake of attending to some urgent matter. We might do it one day, and then two days, and then it becomes a habit, and then we wonder, "Why am I not feeling ecstasy?" and "What happened to my relationship with Kṛṣṇa?" and it could come to, "Why am I doing this anyway?" So, as a reminder, we have this saying: "Don't put the cart before the horse," because we should discriminate on a moment-to-moment basis and a day-to-day basis to remember what's most important. A practice which is most highly recommended is to study the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, the Bhagavad-gītā—all of these literatures that Prabhupāda left behind for us—in the association of devotees. And as Prabhupāda said, you should discuss them thoroughly, threadbare. If you have an old coat that you are attached to and you've worn it so many times, you might notice it becomes threadbare, meaning you'll start to see indentations where you have worn it, and maybe some of the parts wear out, and you put a little patch there—an old tweed jacket, sort of the professorial look of an old worn jacket. Prabhupāda wanted us to discuss what is in the literatures he left behind, share realizations, and to go on hearing regularly. When we feel our sense of enthusiasm flagging, then the remedy is to increase what is most important, and that's hearing and chanting. Someone might say, "Well, I don't have time for all that," but it's not time; it's taste. But how do you get the taste? It's important to have a bhajana. A legitimate bhajana means that you have a set amount of practice that you do every day and develop yourself spiritually. Be very determined to do more than the minimum, if possible; try to read more, expand your hearing more, and try to get association with devotees who are enthusiastic. One of the best ways is what many of you are doing, and it's bearing fruits, which is to bring others into your home and nurture them—as then you yourself become nurtured by nurturing others. You also have to keep your house in good order. When people are coming over, it's a sociological phenomenon that we tend to arrange things in such a way that people will be able to appreciate what we have. So, when you bring new people in, and you tend to reorganize your space and your consciousness, you put everything in order. If you keep doing that, it will take you through various periods of time when otherwise you might have faded and not been in perfect order. So, we are really proud of all of you. There is a wave of Kṛṣṇa consciousness—a lot of young people who are becoming very serious about Kṛṣṇa consciousness, and many others who have gotten good association, have been trained properly, and who are becoming leaders. As Prabhupāda writes in a purport in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, everyone should become a "guru devotee," he says. Means that you should become heavy and take responsibility. Don't complain; serve and purify yourselves, and take a responsibility for helping to spread the saṅkīrtana movement. This is a good time for it. There is a word, duḥkha, which is generally translated as misery, but what it really means is to be out of alignment. Duh- kha, 'kha' means space. We say in California, "I'm in a bad space, man." Or sukha means I'm in a good space. But what it refers to is being out of alignment and then feeling friction because of that. That's simple enough, right? For instance, if an axle is bent and it's not aligned properly with whatever it goes into—(don't ask me, because I'm not a mechanic)— sooner or later there'll be friction, there'll be heat, there'll be a fire, there'll be extra expenses and there'll be insurance claims where the deductible is so high that you might as well not even make a claim anyway. What to speak of, it could cause an accident, you could even die from being out of alignment. And so, there is a way in which the idea of the life of Kṛṣṇa consciousness—of practicing bhakti-yoga—is to come into alignment with our spiritual purpose in life. That solves the problem; it really does. You can't solve it any other way, because any adjustment in the material world ultimately does not solve the main problem, which is that we have a nature which is defined in several ways. But I will mention three of them, because they will be instantly recognizable by you, and there are ways in which you may instantly feel aligned with Kṛṣṇa. The first one is... I spoke about this in London the other day. What we want is loving relationship with Kṛṣṇa. Nothing else will do. It goes to 'ye ’nye ’ravindākṣa vimukta-māninas,' and that indicates there is a person there. And what does "person" mean? It means somebody who reciprocates with us. It’s not even the beauty of Kṛṣṇa, although that’s unsurpassable and we have to have that. Everyone’s looking for it everywhere in this world, and they’re not getting it. It comes, and then they are so disappointed and become cynical, like, "See, It disappears." Attractive people—people actually become angry at them. Say there is an attractive movie star, and then she starts to age. People become angry at her. "Why are you aging? Why didn't you stay the way you were?" They become angry, and they’ll make harsh comments like, "Wear more makeup; don’t disillusion us by turning ugly and turning into ashes." We don’t want that. So people want aesthetic beauty, but more than anything, people want a reciprocation that’s real. Because they can’t trust any reciprocations here in this world, even though they are loving and well-intentioned, nobody can hang on to it, and then it becomes even more torturous. When they feel that Kṛṣṇa specifically cares for them—not just in general to all living entities, and not that we are just part and parcel and we have nothing to do with the material world, but that we have a very specific relationship with Kṛṣṇa, and Kṛṣṇa wants us more than we want him. Did you ever have that sense of wanting somebody and they don’t want you? Unrequited love is another topic. But when you realize that Kṛṣṇa wants us more than we want him —'naiṣkarmyam apy acyuta-bhāva-varjitam.' We have to have that sense that "there’s a loving relationship I have with Kṛṣṇa," and that becomes our main interest in life. Then, whatever else we have to do in this world—get your work done, don’t lollygag, get it done—but develop acyuta-bhāva at all costs. Because that’s the only thing that’s real, and it’s the only thing that will satisfy the soul: to have that acyuta-bhāva. In the spiritual world, there is rāga, which means there’s nuance in the music meant to bring out our emotion. So, when you open the heart with rāga and then you fill it up with the divine sounds of the names of God, then what you have there is a way to be instantly in touch with the feelings of the spiritual world. The holy name is more merciful than Kṛṣṇa himself, because he avails himself to us—even when we are in the worst possible condition, which is being irrationally attached to suffering in the material world. In the third line (Śrī Nāmāṣṭaka - 6), which I didn't go into, the last time we met—'yas tasmin vihitāparādha-nihavaḥ prāṇī samantād bhaved'—he (Rupa Goswami) mentions us in the word prani, which refers to a living entity. Prani means any living entity, and he said, "Even if you are a living entity who has committed unlimited sinful activities, you'll still be emancipated by the process of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, because it's so powerful." 'Yas tasmin vihita-aparadha,' means you’ve made mountains of aparadhas; still, it's no match for the holy name. We also get similar advice from the Padma Purana, which says: nāmāparādha-yuktānāṁ nāmāny eva haranty agham aviśrānti-prayuktāni tāny evārtha-karāṇi ca What's the prescription if you're chanting offensively, or if you just have an offensive nature? It says: go on chanting; don't stop. In fact, increase—do it continually—because there's no other solution. And a solution is not, "This is too hard, so I won't; I'll do something else." The solution is to lean in and continue to do it. So that way, congratulating everyone for being here today. In my observation, chanting japa over a lifetime and maintaining a number, keeping the vow, requires regular encouragement. So, we are being encouraged by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Shukadeva Goswami, and Rupa Goswami. What more do you want? Śrīla Prabhupāda insisted that we do this. If he didn't insist that we do it, a few years after he had left, people could have said, "Well, it's not that important." But he asked us, "No, make a vow and a minimum." So, good for us for being here. Remember that Kṛṣṇa is personally present in His name, and He is more merciful than Himself, and that the solution is to chant more, not less. Don't retreat, but be on the attack against māyā by continuously chanting. We want unlimited happiness. In this world we get advertisements for "some" happiness, and it causes us more distress. Then, we try to take some medicine; it comes with a long list of warnings that this could really mess you up. What we want is the real thing, and it's our birthright. We were born from nectar, we belong in nectar, and it's available. We can take it at any time. So, this Ratha-yātrā festival—it means we’re all marching back to the spiritual world, and we’re not going to take it anymore, right? We’re just not going to take it anymore. This material world, we’re done; finished. We’re on our way back to the spiritual world. That’s the Festival of the Chariots. It’s a very feeling festival. We’re grabbing those ropes, saying, "Kṛṣṇa, we’re with You. We want You to be with us always." We’re pulling them into our hearts, saying, "We won’t settle for any substitutes." The whole material world is one big substitute, but we want to go back home, back to Godhead, and we want to bring everybody in New York with us. How many people are here in New York? Can you name them all? Who they are? Everybody needs individualized attention in this world; otherwise, they die of loneliness in their heart—failure to thrive. They can’t make it in this world without some love. So, we have to give it to them, because we have it. We’ve approached the ocean of love, and we can take it out in buckets, or even one drop will do, but we have to sprinkle it everywhere. We have to go into the boroughs and then we have to go to the Bronx. We have got to go to the Bronx and sprinkle everybody with this name of Kṛṣṇa, which is the kind of nectar from the spiritual world that awakens people to this pure love. Unfortunately, we ran out of time. If you want to continue, then just join the Hare Kṛṣṇa movement—there’s nobody who can stop us. We’re free souls, every one of us. It’s not time; it’s taste. And if we get a taste, then we’ll spend more and more time entering into this realm that Lord Caitanya invited us to come into—of chanting, hearing, and deepening our connection to Kṛṣṇa in the spiritual world. That’s the purpose of life; there’s no other. Everything else is—well, I don’t want to sound fanatical, but it’s kind of a waste of time. We do have to maintain ourselves and be balanced and healthy, eat good food, drink water, try to find some air somewhere on the planet to breathe, and keep the transcendental vibration going. I’ve noticed a phenomenon in the reading of the Śrī Bṛhad-bhāgavatāmṛta, of which I’ve marked a couple of verses that I want to read to you to make my point. I found that in the first reading that I ever heard of Bṛhad-bhāgavatāmṛta, which was with a group of godbrothers and godsisters, there’s a section in which Gopa-kumāra goes back home, back to Godhead. We are interested that when he reaches Goloka Vṛndāvana, it looks the same as Gokula Vraja. We are interested to hear of the characteristics of the people there—that they are in ecstasy. It’s in the afternoon, or late afternoon. Kṛṣṇa had gone to the forest to tend cows, and he comes back, and upon his return, there’s a clamor in Vṛndāvana. People had been practically comatose during his absence, but then there are signs—there is a cloud coming from the dust of the hooves of the calves, and Kṛṣṇa, returning from the forest and all the residents of Vṛndāvana have come alive, and they’re waiting, awaiting Kṛṣṇa coming back into the village. When he comes into the clearing and he sees Gopa-kumāra there, Kṛṣṇa runs forward and he embraces Gopa-kumāra, and Kṛṣṇa faints out of ecstasy for seeing his devotee. This is the revelation from this section of the Bṛhad-bhāgavatāmṛta. I will read a couple of verses before the one I want to point out to you. This is Gopa-kumāra noticing Kṛṣṇa’s beauty. But even that isn’t the point. We know Kṛṣṇa is beautiful; we know Goloka Vṛndāvana is made of cintāmaṇi stone, but that’s not what evokes the ecstasy, he says: "His lotus eyes beamed with a merciful glance, and the varied assets of beauty decorated him in a singular way. The fingers of his lotus hand busily pushed back the locks of his hair, which flew about, adorned with the dust raised by the cows"—see, he’s just come into the vision of Gopa-kumāra for the first time, seeing him in Goloka—"His tender, divine lotus feet touched the surface of the earth just to grant her the gift of supreme splendor. Playfully dancing as they moved, they attracted everyone’s heart with their great eagerness to walk quickly with large steps. The effulgence of his cloud-colored body, shining with the full sweetness of youth, lit up all corners of the sky. His beauty, which captured the hearts of the ever-dear devotees of Vraja, was an ocean abounding with countless excellences. He leaped forward and came close to me, compelled by the affection of his helpless devotee. I fainted in love at seeing him. He caught hold of me by the neck, and suddenly he too fell to the ground." And here’s Sanātana Gosvāmī’s commentary on that verse. It’s short: "Gopa-kumāra was already aware, at least theoretically, that Kṛṣṇa is very affectionate to his helpless devotees, but now he learned that Kṛṣṇa had affection specifically for him. Merely seeing Kṛṣṇa was enough to utterly enchant Gopa-kumāra, but this new discovery pushed him toward the limit of ecstasy." So my point here is: what every soul is looking for is recognition. We find even in modern psychology there are those who point out in raising a child, the child doesn’t cry because he wants to survive; the child cries because he wants his mother to come and recognize him. And this is a theme we could take from Bhagavad-gītā. I love talking about preparation, because there’s a way in which being in preparation mode is exhilarating. In the verse we read, 'prayāṇa-kāle manasācalena bhakti-yuktō yoga-balena caiva'—Kṛṣṇa says you have to have some kind of yoga-balena, some spiritual strength, and that, He says, comes from practicing some kind of yoga. Saṭ-cakra-yoga is indicated here, but He recommends bhakti-yoga, one should be prepared. And as far as cultivating Kṛṣṇa consciousness, preparation for going back to Godhead and goals are not mutually exclusive. Saṅkhyā-pūrvaka-nāma-gāna-naṭibhiḥ kālāvasānī-kṛtau. Śrīnivāsa Ācārya writes in his song about the six Gosvāmīs of Vṛndāvana: they very deliberately counted everything. Saṅkhyā-pūrvaka means "numerical strength," goes with Yoga-balena (spiritual strength). Spiritual strength comes with numerical strength. Therefore, one may consider that by keeping strict sādhanā—keeping the numbers steady or increasing them, one can measure how one is doing. One's steadiness in keeping the numbers is indicative of how one is preparing oneself, so the two things go together. Be in preparation mode always. It’s like sometimes people talk about preparing for giving a class or speaking extemporaneously, but the way I see it, we should be constantly preparing so that it’s quite natural—we’re already in conversation about the subject matters that we might be discussing in a larger group or in a class. That’s kind of preparation mode. And that goes for all the different kinds of practices that we have. When we worship Tulasī-devī, you can consider the way in which we approach her with a sense of joy and also appreciation and reverence for who she is; it is aligning us with the mood of the spiritual world. The antidote to māyā is to change one's intention. Brahmaṇy ādhāya karmāṇi saṅgaṁ tyaktvā karoti yaḥ. The person gives up any claim of proprietorship over any paraphernalia of this world, including one's own body or one's family. "Mānasa, deho, geho, jo kichu mor." Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura makes this clear statement that whatever I have—mind, body, my home, my family—and then he says, even myself, I don't belong to myself, "Kṛṣṇa, I belong to You." This is counterintuitive to the materialistic conception that the more I can attain and hold on to and claim proprietorship over, the more successful I am. The devotee divests him- or herself from all things by properly placing them back in Kṛṣṇa's able hands, and this is the real meaning of yajña. Everything's offerable; the whole world is a fire into which one can offer one's possessions, and if one's intention is aligned properly, then there'll be no problem. Yajñārthāt karmaṇo 'nyatra loko 'yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ. There's a way in which the Lord has given this purpose, beginning of creation, so that you don't become entangled, and that one can attain perfection in life. Bhaya means we become afraid of our own existence. When we deny God, we deny ourselves, because we are part and parcel of God. Just as Prabhupāda mentions in the Nectar of Devotion, when you see the Sun, you also see yourself; and if you deny God, you deny yourself. You are not able to see yourself, because we are always in relationship with God. Prabhupāda explains in his unique purport—unique because the other ācāryas give a different interpretation of the verse—that bhaya in this context means that you are traumatized by being an individual. Prabhupāda gives this example: if you get an infection on your hand, then you go to the doctor, and the doctor says, "Well, you can take this medicine for three weeks," and then you say, "That sounds troublesome; just cut my hand off, because it's troubling me, so just cut it off." Prabhupāda says the tendency that one comes to in frustration—as an individual in relationship with temporary matter—is (frustrating, to say the least) traumatizing. In fact, it's mentioned by Maitreya to Vidura in the Third Canto of the Bhāgavatam that our situation in the material world is like a person having a bad dream. He says, "Imagine that you're seeing somebody cut your head off in a dream, and the agony that you experience in seeing your own head cut off." There may be times when we feel distracted through the whole 16 rounds, but afterwards—while we are doing some laundry or washing the dishes—all of a sudden we feel some sublime repeat of what we just finished, which was chanting 16 rounds. In that case, we can understand that even when we’re not able to be fully attentive, the power of the holy name is effective. An example of this that I extracted from a life experience was in a San Francisco Rath Yatra, when I had been helping in the middle of Golden Gate Park to set up tables for the book distribution. Because it was an extremely cloudy day, I didn’t wear a hat, and the next day I was sunburned. I shouldn’t have been so shocked, but I was. I looked it up online and it said, "You dummy, there’s ultraviolet rays coming through the clouds." Then I was remembering a song from my youth—"I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day." It reminded me of how Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura talks about nāmābhāsa. That is, if you’re trying to chant, even if you don’t have full vision of the name, the form of the Lord, the qualities, and so forth, the rays are coming through. The way he talks about it in the Harināma cintāmaṇi is that it is so beneficial to be able to take those rays that it’s better than any austerity you could possibly perform in any realm. Any other thing that you could possibly do is to getting even that indirect light of the holy name. What’s more, regarding that kind of chanting, Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura says there are two levels of nāmābhāsa. One is when it’s accidental, as in sāṅketyaṁ pārihāsyaṁ vā stobhaṁ helanam eva vā vaikuṇṭha-nāma-grahaṇam aśeṣāgha-haraṁ viduḥ This is a verse from the Sixth Canto of the Bhāgavatam (6.2.14), which says that people who accidentally chant the holy name—they say it derisively, they say it as musical entertainment, etc.—get so much benefit that it erases unlimited sinful reactions. But then, Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura says there’s another kind of nāmābhāsa where the person didn’t do it accidentally; they are doing it very deliberately, but still, they don’t have full realization of the holy name. He said people in that category will definitely come to the level of pure chanting. My mother used to tell me, "Never underestimate the power of 'I’ll show them.'" So many personalities who have succeeded in life have, have at one point or another, been considered losers—and they thought, "I’ll show them," and they put their full attention into improving themselves in one area or another. Michael Jordan, for instance, was cut from his high school basketball team. So, the third way in which—and I am just talking about having a strong decision at the beginning of your activity—you can solidify it is to give up what we call "mistaken unchangeability." Another way of saying it is: 'assume it can be done.' Because oftentimes, people feel, "Other people can do something, but I can’t." One has to give that up. In other words, you have to banish that feeling from your mind or heart—that other people can be successful but I can't. As it is mentioned in the Vedānta-sūtra by Śrīla Vyāsadeva, the Śāstras tell us that we should improve ourselves and we should reach the highest perfection of life. He says, therefore, we should assume that we can do it, because the Śāstras are speaking to all of us, and it would be illogical to think we cannot do it if the Śāstras say we can. Sometimes people might think, for instance, that it is not possible for me to become a pure devotee; "It’s not possible for me to chant 16 rounds; it’s not possible for me to read the Bhāgavatam all the way through." There may be many worthy services to do, but we think, "I can’t do that." That, you have to put aside. "I can’t write a book." What else might you think you cannot do? You can tell what your position is in Kṛṣṇa consciousness just by praying. That's why there are so many prayers in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Rādhika Ramaṇa Prabhu once had given a class in New Vrindavan; he talked about prayer, and he said when he was a kid he grew up on the Bhāgavatam—his mother taught him how to read from the Bhāgavatam. He said he loved hearing the stories, but when the prayers started, he started thinking, 'Oh no, not again,' because they go on and on, he said, as a kid. And then later, he developed a taste for hearing the prayers because he could understand: 'This is a devotee expressing his or her heart to Kṛṣṇa,' and that's how you can tell what Kṛṣṇa consciousness is—by the prayers—and that's how we can tell what our Kṛṣṇa consciousness is by the way we pray. So, we have to notice what we pray. Don't do a niyama-graha, which means just saying a prayer like ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇaṁ, vāñchā-kalpa-tarubhyaś ca kṛpā-sindhubhya eva ca, śarīra-avidyā-jāla-jaḍendriya-tāhe kāla... be there and pray deeply and make your own personal prayer. So, it's a life of prayer, and saṅkīrtan, going out following Lord Caitanya's footsteps to go from town to town, from house to house. It's a very prayer-driven activity. You have to pray deeply. So, that's the first step for book distribution success. You want to hear the second? It rhymes with the first one, so there's 'pray'; the second one is 'display.' When the jīvas are walking around Watford, they're looking for something; they just don't know what it is. When we display the books, then it gives an opportunity to the wandering jīva, the loitering jīva—loitering in the material world, has no business here, actually, just hanging around. They try to dress it up like it's a big deal: 'Put on a uniform, wear a tie.' What are you wearing that piece of cloth around your neck for? "Because I'm seriously dedicated'.. to what? "To putting the stripes in toothpaste?" Something highly necessary for human society. So, if you display the Bhāgavatam, then it's possible that little jīva will catch on it, see it, and think, "Oh, interesting." If they have a little puṇya in their heart—maybe some previous contact, maybe they accidentally said 'Hare Kṛṣṇa' at a soccer match, or they saw Hare Kṛṣṇa—they'll then gravitate towards the book. The third one rhymes with the first two, which is 'say.' So, there's pray, display and say—three things, that's it. And you know what to say. It doesn't matter, because if you've prayed and you've displayed, then whatever you say, it doesn't matter, because it just has to come from your heart. They'll be attracted to the quality of your voice, not exactly what you say, and it comes from realization. It's not some trick; it's real. It's a connection to each soul that comes from you. And if you're genuine, genuinely sincere, and you've genuinely prayed, then you display something that's been given to you—that's the most valuable thing that you have—and you say something about it, it'll be successful. So, there are only three little parts, and anyone who does this will find a connection with Kṛṣṇa, out in the middle of the most crowded places in the world, like 'the Ox'—that's Oxford Street." This morning, just after the program at the Rādhā Govinda Mandir, I took a walk down Nevin Street and turned the corner to the CVS. As I was waiting for Nirākulā Devī Dāsī, my wife—who had some items to purchase—I was chanting outside. I saw a father and son come out; his little boy was probably six, and his face was puckered, and he was crying. His father said to him, "Tell me in words, why you’re crying. What’s the matter?" But he could only cry. I walked into the store to see, was there something that he wanted or needed in there? I couldn’t see anything. What’s more, most things were locked up—even the toothpaste, razor blades, anything of significant value was locked behind glass—and I started thinking, "No wonder he’s crying." And then I thought, "This is us here in this world; everything we want, that we desire, is locked up." You have to work hard to get anything in this world. The one thing that is free, we don’t ask for: it is God’s grace. It falleth from the heavens like rain, sun-strained. It comes to everyone, but we’re looking for many things that are not worthy of looking for. They’re beneath our dignity as souls—the things we seek in this world. So, we have an opportunity to take what’s been given to us for free, which gives the highest reward, and it only requires a sincere heart to sing the names of Kṛṣṇa and call out. The mantra is written in a form which allows us to simply call out. We don’t need to know any Sanskrit; we just need to have a heart which is yearning to reconnect to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Tattva means to understand 'that, because tattva is "thatness." Tat means it's a demonstrative pronoun—there's something you can point to that exists. There are categories that are distinguishable, and when one relegates—that is, puts in the proper perspective—what the material body is, what its purpose is, and to whom it belongs, then one is properly situated. One should relegate his body to the illusory world through his reason. So, using our reason, we can understand that "I have nothing to do with my body. My body is part of the Mahatattva, just as all the elements that are in the world are in this body, but I am not of that." Asaṅgo hy ayaṁ puruṣaḥ means, "I have no connection with it." It’s not "part of my thing," as I used to say; "it’s not my bag, man." So, relegating the body to that position, and one who has successfully done that is described in the Gītā (BG 5.8-9): naiva kiñcit karomīti yukto manyeta tattva-vit paśyañ śṛṇvan spṛśañ jighrann aśnan gacchan svapañ śvasan pralapan visṛjan gṛhṇann unmiṣan nimiṣann api indriyāṇīndriyārtheṣu vartanta iti dhārayan Such a person never considers this body and all its workings—whatever it's doing—as his own. All those words were about how the body is interacting with the material world: receiving, giving, opening, closing the eyes, evacuating. That person, naivakiñcit—not even a little bit; kiñcit means "something," and naiva kiñcit means na-eva kiñcit, "not even a tiny bit"—does he think, "Oh yeah, that's me." He thinks, "The body is acting, and I am aloof," therefore that is the proper relegation. The other relegation was expressed by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to Sanātana Gosvāmī, who felt so unworthy of being in the presence—not just of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, but of anybody in Jagannātha Purī—because he thought, "My body with this disease is so abominable; what to speak of me in general? If anybody like a pūjārī bumps into me, then I'll be cursed, I'll commit an offense, and Mahāprabhu is embracing me out of love, but my skin is full of oozing sores." Therefore, he thought in his mind, "When the Jagannātha Ratha-yātrā starts, I'll throw myself under the wheel in the presence of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu." He didn't tell anybody; he just had that plan incubating in his mind. And then, when Mahāprabhu visited Haridāsa Ṭhākura, where Sanātana Gosvāmī was staying, He one day abruptly said, "I do not approve of your idea to commit suicide by jumping in." He said to Haridāsa Ṭhākura, "What is the character of this person? He has already surrendered his body to Me, and now he's thinking of destroying it. What do you think of that? Caitanya Mahāprabhu said that you should practice giving respect to all others and not accepting respect in return. The fact is, it’s uplifting. The ego has a diatribe going on that if you don’t assert yourself, you’ll cease to exist; your reputation will not be held, your power in the world won’t be held, and you’ll lose out on everything. If you don’t assert yourself, however—those like Mādhavendra Purī, who kept to himself and was a pure devotee of the Lord—became the most famous and sought-after, even though he didn’t want anything. It’s paradoxical. Practically, those who don’t want anything become effective servants of the Lord, and what to speak of leaders. Prabhupāda talked about how even the pauper is proud of his penny. He said he saw an unhoused person at Howrah Station who was coveting some half-burnt firewood that he had lugged along with him, and he just noted—did Prabhupāda—that he was attached to his little domain; even though it was a paltry domain, he was proud of that, and kings are proud of theirs. Mucukunda notes that a king rides on a big elephant with a golden saddle and is surrounded by people extolling his glories. He said, “But the same kingly body is reduced to feces just after he dies. I’ve been in such illusion that I thought, ‘Oh, I am a king.” It’s cultivation: nirmāna-moha jita-saṅga-doṣāḥ. Kṛṣṇa says to practice not being the center and sublimating the ego. kṛṣṇa-bhakta—niṣkāma, ataeva ‘śānta’ bhukti-mukti-siddhi-kāmī sakali ‘aśānta’ (Cc Madhya 19.149) We get no peace when we try to put ourselves in the center, but kṛṣṇa-bhakta is niṣkāma, śānta—because he doesn’t want anything, niṣkāma ataev he certainly doesn’t want anything; he has no personal desire, only wants to serve Kṛṣṇa. This is the only respite from the storm of the false ego that pursues us to the far ends of our lives to make sure that we assert ourselves and make sure that we’re the number one in every circumstance. But devotees eschew the false ego’s demands and take shelter of being the servant of the servant. I heard Prabhupāda this morning saying, “Everyone’s proud.” He said it’s okay to be proud that you’re a servant of Kṛṣṇa. If somebody says, “What are you, anyway?” You can say, “I’m a humble servant of Kṛṣṇa. Not only does the Supreme Personality of Godhead enjoy the company of His devotees, but because He is unlimited, He wants to increase His devotees unlimitedly. Thus, He descends to the material world to induce the non-devotees and rebellious living entities to return home, back to Godhead. He requests them to surrender unto Him, because, unlimited as He is, He wants to increase His devotees unlimitedly." The Kṛṣṇa Consciousness movement is an attempt to increase the number of pure devotees of the Supreme Lord more and more. It is certain that a devotee who helps in this endeavor to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead becomes indirectly a controller of the Supreme Lord. Although the Supreme Lord is full in six opulences, He does not feel transcendental bliss without His devotees. An example that may be cited in this regard is that if a very rich man does not have sons in a family, he does not feel happiness. Indeed, sometimes a rich man adopts a son to complete his happiness. The science of transcendental bliss is known to the pure devotee. Therefore, the pure devotee is always engaged in increasing the transcendental happiness of the Lord. (SB 9.4.64) In crafting the purposes of ISKCON, Śrīla Prabhupāda writes in the seventh purpose: "By publishing books, magazines, booklets, and distributing them, we will fulfill the aforementioned seven purposes of ISKCON." There is a way in which saṅkīrtana gives life to an entire community, where we have growing numbers of devotees coming to sincerely hear, chant, and serve the Lord. When they are given the opportunity to participate—even in the smallest ways—in distributing books, reaching out to others, and presenting them, they become closer to Kṛṣṇa. It is an intimate service, and it brings life to the entire community. Without that experience, and without us inculcating in them the spirit of saṅkīrtana—and the spirit I have just expressed that Prabhupāda mentions in his purports—people remain in the basic condition of devotional service, kaniṣṭha-adhikārī, but they need to come to the madhyama-adhikārī platform by engaging in outreach and saṅkīrtana, and especially book distribution, it is the most practical. So for Bhādra, it is a perfect time to express that this is not a divisions of labor. There are some people who distribute books, there are some people who don’t. It is a call to everyone to get involved. Everyone in the community can get involved—even if people have pets. The pets should be involved! They should sit down and preach to their poochie: "Dear poochie, you are going to come out with us for book distribution." Make them a backpack. Kids can go out, old people can go out, people in wheelchairs can go out. If you are blind, you can go out. If you are happy, unhappy—everyone should devise a means through which to expand the distribution of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. It is an outrageously fun activity. It brings life to the temple. It fulfills all the aforementioned principles, the six that Prabhupāda put forward. We are the lucky ones, because somehow or other this service has landed on our heads, and somehow or other, we have got this number of 100,008. I don’t know how it happened. It just happened by chance, just like the universe all came together by chance. So, here we are, and this is it. Attention is where everything begins. It's our asset. May I go out on a limb and say it's our main asset? Or even further to the tip of the limb: it's our only asset. We get to choose where to place our attention. Attention management is what determines the direction of our life. In fact, a student of mine made me a beautiful sign for my birthday, and I have it hanging outside my office here on the wall. It says, "Where attention goes, energy flows." It's something I come back to again and again as a great reminder every time I walk in my room: where attention goes, energy flows. So that's why we say here, attention is where everything begins. In the Bhagavad-gītā, there is a beautiful verse in which Kṛṣṇa says, "yānti..."—you can go certain places. How do you do it? You place your attention there, and we're free to move about the universe. There are destinations beyond the universe. Can you go there? Yes. How do you do it? You move your attention in that direction. How do you know about it? Well, there are channels through which information comes about other universes, other planets. In fact, the first book my teacher wrote before he came to America is called Easy Journey to Other Planets. That caught my attention. I was in high school, and I thought, "That's a good idea. I would like to take an easy journey to another planet." It's not fantastical; it's reality. We move here, there, and everywhere because of our attention. So, this is a practice. Listening with rapt attention. As homework, if I may be so bold: try noticing how you attend to a subject matter. Notice. For instance, every night my wife and I get together to read. We read out loud and listen to one another reading. I find it a very bonding kind of practice and edifying, especially at the end of the day. I notice that there are different modes I can listen in as she's reading. I can drift off to other subjects, and then I'll have to go back and say, "What did you just read? Can you read that again?" Or, I can lean in. Lord Caitanya has said that in this age no one needs to change his position, but one should give up the endeavor to understand the Absolute Truth by speculative reasoning. One should learn to become the servant of those who are in knowledge of the Supreme Lord. If one is fortunate enough to take shelter of a pure devotee, hear from him about self-realization and follow in his footsteps, one will be gradually elevated to the position of a pure devotee. In this verse particularly, the process of hearing is strongly recommended, and this is very appropriate. Although the common man is often not as capable as so-called philosophers, faithful hearing from an authoritative person will help one transcend this material existence and go back to Godhead, back to home. (BG 13.26,purport) And, of course, in the purport, Prabhupāda is referring to Lord Brahmā, who in the Tenth Canto, 14th Chapter, says: jñāne prayāsam udapāsya namanta eva jīvanti san-mukharitāṁ bhavadīya-vārtām sthāne sthitāḥ śruti-gatāṁ tanu-vāṅ-manobhir ye prāyaśo ’jita jito ’py asi tais tri-lokyām This verse was spoken by Lord Brahmā, who is an intellectual. In fact he studied the Vedas three times. How many here have studied all the Vedas three times, or the Bhagavad-gītā, for that matter? So, he had studied them three times. He is smart enough to take on the duties of recreating the material world when it comes into being. Of course, he is a devotee. He met Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana. We know the pastime of how Kṛṣṇa had bewildered him—the Brahmā-vimohana-līlā. He was bewildered by the mystic power of Kṛṣṇa. When Brahmā had stolen away the calves and cowherd friends, Kṛṣṇa re-manifested them exactly as they were before. So, there were two sets: one that Brahmā had stolen, and the ones that were now marching around town. After seeing that all of them were emanations from Kṛṣṇa, and realizing that this little cowherd boy, who was eating with His left hand, was not to be trifled with—that He was the Supreme Personality of Godhead—he offered these prayers. Near the beginning of his prayers, jñāne prayāsam udapāsya namanta eva, says: "Give up trying to understand God by your own power." And sthāne sthitāḥ śruti-gatāṁ tanu-vāṅ-manobhir says: "Submissively hear in the association of devotees about Kṛṣṇa." From that, one will come to this superior form of devotional service, which means that Kṛṣṇa is conquered by your love and submission. Ajita jito —the Ajita (the unconquerable) becomes jita (conquered); it means He is conquered by love. So, how can one come to that position? Not by erudite scholarship, but by humbly and submissively hearing from those who have knowledge, as Prabhupāda points out here, and being submissive in one’s service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So, there is such a thing as submissive hearing. There is also an argumentative state of mind. Anugraha, which we translate oftentimes as mercy, literally means someone who grabs you and takes you in the right direction—brings you along, doesn't leave you behind. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu taught that Kṛṣṇa not only can become known, or that He reveals Himself through the process of bhakti, but He also takes us by the hand and brings us to our eternal position in the spiritual world. So, chanting is a communion with Kṛṣṇa, because He is non-different from His name. Therefore, when we’re chanting Kṛṣṇa’s names, we’re worshiping Him by our tongue—āsyenedam upāsya (Śrī Nāmāṣṭaka verse 6), which means āsya means the mouth or the opening of the mouth, and āsyenedam is in the instrumental case, which means that we’re using our mouth to upāsya, which means to worship Kṛṣṇa. By that process, Kṛṣṇa extends Himself to us, reveals Himself to us, and brings us along—anugraha. So, chanting is a very natural process, because if anyone has had any experience here in the material world and has at any time felt helpless, confused, or—I’m thinking of a third, anyone want to offer? Disturbed?—then there’s a natural sense of calling out: "Please help me." So, we can take it that this is a very personal connection with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, by repeating His names and the mantra: Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare / Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare refers to Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of God, and also His eternal consort, His female counterpart. The two go together, Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa; they’re the perfect whole in two, and so everything’s complete within the mantra. All perfection can be achieved by chanting the mantra, and here we are, in the middle of Silicon Valley, practicing the age-old process of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa so feel free to call out to Kṛṣṇa when you chant. "Please engage me in your service, and please save me from this ocean of material existence."

I have noticed that in the Kali Yuga, although the last pillar supposedly is truthfulness, that seems to have been eroding quite quickly. I have noticed, however, that oftentimes people make public statements in a political setting, but then, when they’re under deposition, they completely change their story because they know that in deposition under oath, you’re liable for telling the truth and can be held accountable for it. Well, those brave souls who are accepting initiation are putting themselves under scrutiny. Freedom requires responsibility. rāga-dveṣa-vimuktais tu viṣayān indriyaiś caran ātma-vaśyair vidheyātmā prasādam adhigacchati Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad Gītā (BG 2.64), "If you want to be free, you have to take responsibility.
