So sind mit diesem Begriff konkrete historische Reiche und Erfahrungen verbunden. Dass "Empire" darüber hinaus eine historische Epoche und spezifische Wahrnehmung von Herrschaft umfassen kann, ist der analytische und narrative Fluchtpunkt des Werkes "Empires. Globale Geschichte 1780-1920" der Historikerin Prof. Dr. Ulrike von Hirschhausen und des Historikers Prof. Dr. Jörn Leonhard. "Empires" meint dabei eine Herrschaftsform, der wechselseitige und auch unintendierte Auswirkungen ihrer Politik inhärent sind. Einfache Dichotomien wie allmächtig Herrschende auf der einen und ohnmächtige Beherrschte auf der anderen Seite oder unumschränkte Metropole und handlungsunfähige Randgebiete gilt es dabei zu hinterfragen.
