Idar-Oberstein és una ciutat d'uns 35.000 habitants del sud-oest d'Alemanya, coneguda per la seva indústria de pedres precioses i famosa per l'"església de la roca", una petita capella que està literalment encastada dins una gran roca. Una llegenda explica que dos germans que vivien al castell que hi ha a sobre es van enamorar de la mateixa noia i un dia que un germà no hi era, l'altre va aprofitar per casar-s'hi. Quan el germà que havia marxat del castell va tornar i se'n va assabentar, va tirar el germà daltabaix de la roca. Va acabar confessant el crim a un abat i aquest, com a càstig, li va fer excavar amb les seves pròpies mans una església al lloc on es va trobar el cos del germà, just 50 metres sota el castell. Això és només una llegenda, però el que us explicarem avui, tot i que sembla mentida, va passar de veritat. Un assassí sense rostre atemoreix Alemanya i França, amb un final sorprenent i ens atreviríem a dir que patètic.
