Nuestro planeta gira alrededor de una estrella que deambula solitaria por esta zona de la Vía Láctea. Esa "soledad" no suele ser habitual, de hecho, la mayoría de las estrellas que existen en la galaxia forman sistemas dobles, triples, incluso mayores. La relación entre esas estrellas con sus compañeras es muy interesante porque dependiendo de su tamaño, de la edad o de la distancia que las separan, su evolución puede seguir derroteros muy diferentes. Algunas son tan cercanas entre sí que intercambian materia y pueden llegar a fusionarse generando en unos instantes una enorme emisión de energía que ilumina toda la galaxia. Observar uno de esos acontecimientos es difícil, como cuenta Carmen Sánchez Contreras, investigadora del CSIC en el Centro de Astrobiología. No obstante los remanentes que quedan después un acontecimiento tan dramático sí que son observables. Carmen Sánchez ha participado en una investigación que ha permitido estudiar quince estrellas inusuales, conocidas como "fuentes de agua", que han pasado recientemente por un episodio de ese tipo.
