La comparación de genomas completos, que constan de miles de millones de "letras" cada uno, es una tarea tan ingente que hasta ahora era imposible. Esto ha cambiado gracias al desarrollo de un nuevo método de comparación de genomas por un grupo de investigadores de la Universidad de California. Este nuevo método es capaz de alinear, es decir, de colocar una encima de otra, las secuencias similares sin necesitar para ello una secuencia de referencia, que hasta el momento era la del genoma humano. La necesidad de esta secuencia de referencia implicaba que podíamos determinar con precisión la relación genética entre el gato y el ser humano, o entre el ratón y el ser humano, pero no podíamos sacar conclusiones fiables sobre la similitud o diferencias entre los genomas de gato y ratón. El nuevo método soslaya esta dificultad y permite encontrar relaciones fiables entre los genomas de cientos de especies distintas al mismo tiempo. Más información en https://cienciaes.com
