Para aumentar la diversidad genética, e incrementar así la resistencia de una especie a los avatares del entorno, la Naturaleza ha encontrado la solución de la reproducción sexual. Sin embargo, de vez en cuando se producen excepciones. Una de ellas es muy reciente, ya que apareció solo en 1995. Se trata de una nueva especie de cangreja de río llamada Procambarus virginalis. Esta especie consta solo de hembras que, obviamente, se reproducen sin machos de manera asexuada. Estas cangrejas ponen huevos fértiles de los que solo nacen hembras que son clones virtualmente idénticos a sus madres. Cada ocho semanas una de estas hembras genera otras cien. Desde entonces, ha colonizado varios países de Europa central y la isla de Madagascar. No es conocido cómo esta especie puede realizar esta hazaña, pero estudios recientes indican que la respuesta podría encontrarse en la epigenética, es decir, en modificaciones químicas en el ADN que controlan el funcionamiento de los genes.
