Durante las festividades navideñas se puede escuchar música en todos lados: en iglesias, radios y centros comerciales. Específicamente los villancicos, tanto religiosos como seculares, juegan un papel importante en la temporada decembrina, pero ¿cuántas de estas obras han sido escritas por mujeres? A continuación escucharemos dos villancicos arreglados y compuestos por músicas contemporáneas. El primero, un arreglo de la compositora canadiense Eleanor Daley, de una canción popular francesa de 1557 llamada Une jeune Pucelle. La historia del villancico es larga y compleja, la letra fue escrita originalmente en el idioma wendat (hurón) en 1642 por un sacerdote jesuita francés y se usó para presentar el cristianismo a los pueblos indígenas. El título original del villancico era Jesusus Ahatonhia, que se tradujo de Wendat a 'Jesús ha nacido'. En esta ocasión interpretada por The Choirs of Pembroke College dirigido por Anna Lapwood El siguiente villancico “We Toast The Days” de la compositora coral estadounidense Linda Kachelmeier, técnicamente no está escrito para Navidad, pues la compositora la realizó para ser cantada a medianoche en la víspera de Año Nuevo con amigos y familiares. Esta pieza tiene una inspiración celta y se grabó durante la pandemia por el The Choral Scholars of University College Dublin. Su director artístico Desmond Earley, dijo que la misma constituye “un recordatorio de la fuerza, el amor y la esperanza que resonaron en todo el mundo no solo en Navidad sino también durante los períodos de dificultad”.
