La transferencia genética lateral (TGL) entre individuos que no pertenecen a la misma especie se ha demostrado en algunos casos, pero su frecuencia, no es aún muy clara, aunque bien visto es un ejemplo de que la naturaleza está haciendo el papel de acelerar la evolución lo que resulta en características con un valor adaptativo más alto. Investigadores del Departamento de Ciencias de Animales y Plantas de la Universidad de Sheffield han encontrado que las gramíneas, saltándose el principio darwiniano de la transmisión de los caracteres en sentido vertical, de padres a hijos, lo hacen de forma horizontal.
