Landshut Lectures: Mike Savage I What are the challenges of inequality in the 21st century?

Landshut Lecture von und Verleihung des Siegfried Landshut-Preises 2022 an Mike Savage vom 22.06.2023. Critics of inequality usually see it as an affront to fairness. But this framing will always be contested by those prioritising liberal and libertarian ideals who instead see fairness as dependent on freedom. I therefore argue that the challenge of inequality can be better positioned as a threat to social sustainability which places inequality alongside climate change as the two dual crises that humanity needs to address. Pursuing this argument forces us to go beyond seeing inequality as defined simply by income differences, or between groups. These concerns need to be subsumed into an overarching focus on wealth inequality,in which the build-up of various private assets – such as tied up in private property, savings, stocks and shares – have come to generate fundamental divides between wealthy privileged groups who imagine their futures as bound up with their own private provision, and thus cut themselves loose from wider public and collective wellbeing. Die enorme Breite des Werkes von Savage, sein innovativer interdisziplinärer Zugriff, die Reflektiertheit seiner Forschungsmethoden und auch die Fähigkeit, seine Forschungsergebnisse einer größeren Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen, haben die WissenschaftlerInnen am Hamburger Institut für Sozialforschung dazu bewogen, ihm den Siegfried-Landshut-Preis 2022 zuzusprechen.
