Hace unos 5,5 millones de años, la crisis salina del Mesiniense transformó el Mediterráneo en un paisaje casi seco, permitiendo que la fauna circulara entre Europa y África. Cuando el mar regresó, Cerdeña quedó aislada, convirtiéndose en un laboratorio natural de evolución. Allí surgieron ecosistemas únicos, con especies como la musaraña gigante Asoriculus, la pica sarda Prolagus sardus o el pequeño bóvido Nesogoral, adaptadas a un entorno insular lleno de depredadores como la veloz hiena Chasmoporthetes. Con el tiempo, nuevas especies llegaron y otras evolucionaron, dando lugar a faunas sucesivas marcadas por el gigantismo insular. Sin embargo, la llegada del ser humano hace unos 10.000 años cambió este equilibrio: la caza, la deforestación y la introducción de especies invasoras provocaron extinciones en cadena.
