Las primeras tortugas marinas.

La historia de las tortugas marinas se remonta a mediados del Cretácico inferior, hace unos 120 millones de años. La tortuga marina más antigua que conocemos es Desmatochelys. El primer ejemplar de Desmatochelys fue descubierto por un trabajador del ferrocarril cerca de Fairbury, en Nebraska, y descrito por el paleontólogo Samuel Wendell Williston, de la Universidad de Kansas, en 1894. Se trata de una tortuga de metro y medio de largo, con un cráneo de unos veinte centímetros, con grandes fosas nasales. Las patas delanteras tenían forma de remo, y el plastrón, la parte ventral del caparazón, apenas estaba unido a la parte superior.
