Learning to Say “No”

from A Time to Care: The Caregivers Podcast · host Isabel Melgarejo

Many of us were raised to prioritize others' feelings so much that we’ve forgotten how to say “no.” We’ve been conditioned to avoid discomfort and ensure we don’t hurt anyone, but in doing so, we often neglect our own needs. Saying "no" isn’t about rejecting others; it's about honoring yourself. When we refuse something that doesn’t serve us, we’re making space for what truly matters. Sometimes that means certain tasks might not get done—or someone else will step in to handle them—and that's okay. It’s also important to remember that someone feeling uncomfortable with your "no" doesn’t mean you’ve harmed them. Discomfort can be a natural part of boundaries, both for the person setting them and the person receiving them. What matters most is that we learn to say “no” with kindness and confidence, knowing it’s an essential step toward self-respect and balance. This simple word can be transformative, allowing us to reclaim our time, energy, and emotional well-being. Saying “no” when necessary isn’t selfish; it’s an act of self-care.
