Led Astray: Christian Men Are Called to Be Holy, Not Harmless

Modern culture tells men to optimize everything: their bodies, routines, income, productivity and self-image. But becoming a better version of yourself is not necessarily the same as becoming the man God created you to be. In this Grey Matter commentary, Leighton Grey examines the cultural assault on masculinity and the disappearance of mentorship, intentional formation and meaningful rites of passage. Drawing on Dante’s Divine Comedy, biblical examples and the tradition of muscular Christianity, Leighton argues that young men need more than therapy apps, motivational advice and self-improvement systems. They need wise mentors, real responsibilities, spiritual accountability and a purpose directed toward God. He also confronts what he calls “the good man lie”: the belief that Christian men should remain pleasant, passive and inoffensive at any cost. Biblical masculinity demands something greater. It calls men to holiness, courageous service, faithful stewardship, honest repentance and obedience even when it disrupts an easy peace. Leighton concludes with two practical challenges: a mission audit to determine whether personal growth is serving God or the ego, and a holiness reset that calls men to confront the responsibilities and difficult conversations they have been avoiding. God does not call men merely to appear good. He calls them to be holy, faithful and set apart.
