Legal Scholar Highlights Colonial Influences and Discrimination in Saint Lucia’s Legal System

Legal scholar and former Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony has highlighted the historical and colonial influences that continue to shape aspects of Saint Lucia’s legal system. Reflecting on the country’s Civil Code, Dr. Anthony explained that the legislation was historically structured largely around the protection of commercial and property rights, offering limited protections to the newly emancipated population. He also noted discriminatory provisions affecting children born outside of marriage and argued that some practices rooted in the colonial era have continued to influence the legal system to the present day.
