LGBTQ+ Finances: The Hidden Challenges (And How to Take Back Control of Your Money)

In this solo episode I talk about LGBTQ+ finances, the hidden challenges that often go undiscussed, and how to take back control. I want to be honest up front that this is not my lived experience, I am happily married to my husband, but I have worked with many same sex couples over the years and there are real financial challenges here that I do not think get talked about enough. So much of it, I have found, comes down to the roles we take in a relationship rather than gender or orientation. I share a client who is the main breadwinner in a same sex couple and describes the very same push and pull I hear from anyone carrying that role. From there I look at the costs that can sit under the surface, thinner family safety nets, the price of living somewhere you feel safe, and the significant costs of IVF, adoption and surrogacy. I also cover why estate planning matters so much, especially for couples who are not married, and why building your own independence and safety net matters whatever your relationship looks like.
