Esta semana abordamos la estimulación eléctrica del sistema nervioso para conseguir paliar determinadas condiciones. El 7 de febrero de 2022 aparecía un importante artículo publicado en Nature Medicine que describe una nueva tecnología la cual es capaz de restaurar la movilidad en pacientes que tienen dañada la médula espinal mediante la implantación de un conjunto de electrodos sobre todas las conexiones nerviosas que los científicos consideraron que debían ser estimuladas. Gracias a esa técnica tres personas con la médula espinal seccionada han podido volver a vivir la experiencia de caminar. Pero la estimulación eléctrica podría tener otros usos. Hace dos décadas, unos científicos estadounidenses utilizaron la estimulación eléctrica con un fin muy distinto, para controlar el comportamiento de unas ratas a distancia como si fueran robots. La manera en la que lo habían conseguido era, precisamente, mediante la implantación de electrodos en las zonas adecuadas del cerebro de ese roedor.
