Lindsay Clancy's Real Diagnosis Was Named And Ignored

from Hidden Killers Live! Daily True Crime News & Breakdowns · host Hidden Killers Podcast

The most uncomfortable fact in the medical testimony is not that nobody thought of bipolar disorder. It is that somebody did.Rebecca Jollotta, a psychiatric nurse practitioner at South Shore Health, testified she told Lindsay Clancy and her husband that Clancy might have an underlying bipolar disorder, months before the children died. She prescribed an antipsychotic used to treat it. She remained on antidepressant medication.Clancy's plea on every one of the three first-degree murder counts is not guilty. Her children died in Duxbury on January 24, 2023. What happened is not the disputed part. Her lawyers argue the illness, not the woman, drove what happened, and that she is not criminally responsible. The Commonwealth's theory is intentional, rational conduct.Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski for the last of three conversations.Dr. The bipolar question came up in December 2022 and Tufts testified she closed it, citing no mania. The signs she described looking for were euphoria, very high energy, and grandiosity. At McLean, staff testified they observed symptoms that could indicate bipolar disorder and discussed sleep loss tipping a person into hypomania, then discharged her with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, severe, without psychotic features.Shavaun explains what bipolar I is, why research puts the average diagnostic delay at six to ten years, and why depression is almost always what gets written down first. She takes on whether the textbook picture of mania describes a mother at home with an infant. The antidepressant question gets an honest answer rather than a convenient one. The studies conflict, and a toxicology expert testified Clancy's drug levels were low.Jollotta wrote to Clancy that everything she was describing sounded like postpartum depression. Clancy wrote back that starting new medications with side effects frightened her, and at another point that she could not keep going the way she was. Shavaun also covers why hypomania so rarely brings a patient through the door, since nobody schedules an appointment to report feeling capable and energetic.END LINKSJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
