Watch the video https://youtu.be/BJ-GIKzWdI8 Jaundice is not the disease itself. It is a visual warning sign that bilirubin is backing up somewhere in the body. In this episode, we explain the difference between prehepatic, intrahepatic, and posthepatic jaundice so you can better understand what your patient’s labs, urine, stool, skin, and sclera may be telling you. We also cover key nursing assessment findings, including yellow sclera, dark tea-colored urine, clay-colored stool, pruritus, abnormal bilirubin levels, elevated AST and ALT, increased ALP and GGT, and the urgent need to assess for sepsis when jaundice appears suddenly. You will also learn how liver failure can lead to hepatic encephalopathy, why ammonia builds up in the bloodstream, and how medications like lactulose and rifaximin help protect the brain. We explain why nurses monitor bowel movements, mental status, ammonia levels, fall risk, bleeding risk, PT/INR, diet, rest periods, and patient safety so closely in liver failure patients. This episode also includes neonatal jaundice, including physiological jaundice, pathological jaundice, breastfeeding jaundice, breast milk jaundice, kernicterus, and phototherapy nursing care. We explain why newborn bilirubin levels matter, how phototherapy works, and what nurses must monitor during treatment. Topics covered in this episode include: Liver failure nursing care Jaundice and hyperbilirubinemia Bilirubin pathophysiology Prehepatic, intrahepatic, and posthepatic jaundice Dark urine and clay-colored stool Pruritus and bile salt buildup Hepatic encephalopathy Ammonia levels Lactulose nursing considerations Rifaximin for hepatic encephalopathy Bleeding risk and elevated INR Sepsis and acute jaundice Neonatal jaundice Kernicterus Phototherapy nursing care NCLEX nursing concepts This episode is designed to help you stop memorizing random symptoms and start connecting the dots at the bedside. When you understand the “why” behind jaundice, liver failure, and bilirubin buildup, you become safer, sharper, and more confident in patient care. #LiverFailure #Jaundice #Hyperbilirubinemia #NursingStudents #NCLEX #NursingSchool #HepaticEncephalopathy #Lactulose #NurseEducation #SuperNursePodcast Want to reach out?
