Los ictiosaurios aparecieron hace unos 250 millones de años, a principios del Triásico. Habían evolucionado a partir de reptiles terrestres, de forma parecida a como, mucho tiempo después, evolucionaron las ballenas y delfines a partir de mamíferos terrestres. Los ictiosaurios se parecen a los peces modernos y a los delfines. Tenían el hocico largo y puntiagudo y, generalmente, en las mandíbulas tenían un gran número de pequeños dientes cónicos para atrapar presas pequeñas, como peces y cefalópodos. Las partes duras de las presas, como las espinas de los peces y los picos de los calamares, se retenían sin digerir en el estómago y se regurgitaban. Algunas especies, como Thalattoarchon, un ictiosaurio de más de ocho metros de longitud que vivió en el Triásico medio, hace unos 245 millones de años, eran superdepredadores, equipados con grandes dientes con forma de cuchilla para capturar presas de gran tamaño.
