Los metriorrínquidos fueron cocodrilomorfos marinos que vivieron entre el Jurásico medio y el Cretácico inferior, hace entre 165 y 136 millones de años. A diferencia de los cocodrilos actuales, eran completamente acuáticos: tenían extremidades transformadas en aletas, cola con aleta en media luna y piel lisa, lo que los hacía altamente hidrodinámicos. Probablemente eran vivíparos y de sangre fría. Sus adaptaciones incluían glándulas salinas para expulsar el exceso de sal y orificios nasales en el extremo del hocico para respirar sin sacar la cabeza del agua. Sus fósiles se han hallado en Europa y América. La competencia con tiburones y pliosaurios, junto al enfriamiento global y el descenso del nivel del mar a inicios del Cretácico, provocó su declive y extinción.
