En 1915, el palentólogo Maurice Mehl describió, a partir de unos restos fósiles descubiertos unos años antes en el oeste de Wyoming, "una criatura musculosa y ligera, posiblemente bípeda ocasional, y seguramente veloz", con el nombre de Poposaurus, por la formación geológica en la que se encontraron los fósiles, Popo Agie [Popo Sha], que en la lengua crow significa "río gorgoteante". Poposaurus era un depredador bípedo de unos cuatro metros de largo, de los que la mitad corresponden a la cola, y entre sesenta y cien kilos de peso, que vivió hace unos 210 millones de años en el sudoeste de los Estados Unidos. A lo largo de las décadas, Poposaurus se ha catalogado en diferentes grupos de dinosaurios: ornitisquios, sauropodomorfos, estegosaurios, terópodos... Sin embargo, en 1977, el paleontólogo inglés Peter Galton lo reclasificó con los pseudosuquios, arcosaurios más próximos a los cocodrilos que a los dinosaurios.
