Una de las vacunas más viejas del mundo es la vacuna contra la tuberculosis. Fue inventada por el médico francés Albert Calmette y su asistente Camille Guérin, a principios del siglo XX, cultivando el bacilo causante de la tuberculosis bovina hasta conseguir una cepa mucho menos virulenta que el bacilo original (BCG). Desde entonces la vacuna ha protegido de la tuberculosis a cientos de millones de personas en el mundo. La comunidad científica ha estudiado en estos últimos años la salud de las personas vacunadas con el bacilo BCG y ha descubierto que la vacuna no solamente protege de la tuberculosis sino que resulta bastante eficaz para luchar contra el cáncer de vejiga y también produce beneficios frente a enfermedades alérgicas y autoinmunes.
