Hace unos 125 millones de años, a principios del Cretácico, apareció en Eurasia un grupo de pterosaurios con unas características únicas, que los paleontólogos han agrupado en la familia de los tapejáridos. Estos pterosaurios, de tamaño pequeño o mediano, presentan una cresta ósea sobre el hocico, que en algunas especies sostiene una cresta aún mayor de tejido blando y fibroso, hecha de queratina, que se extiende hacia arriba y hacia atrás sobre el cráneo. Aunque tenían los ojos pequeños, su vista era excelente, mucho mejor que la de otros pterosaurios, y probablemente era el sentido que más utilizaban. En lugar de dientes, tienen un pico grueso de queratina semejante al de los loros. Los hombros son estrechos y bajos, de manera que las alas se unen al cuerpo más cerca del abdomen que de la espalda; su silueta recuerda a la de algunos aviones.
