Loss 18/101: Loss of a full term baby: Katie Joy Duke

from The Silent Why: finding hope in grief and loss · host Chris Sandys, Claire Sandys, Katie Joy Duke

#025. This episode is the second in a small series of three, exploring the different stages that can all fall within 'loss of a baby'. From childlessness through to the death of a newborn, loss of a baby is tragically the story of many people, but the experiences, and types of loss attached, vary greatly. This is The Silent Why, a podcast on a mission to open up conversations around loss and grief and to see if hope can be found in 101 different types of loss.Although in this podcast we don't normally focus too much on one area of a loss consecutively, we felt it was important to show just how many different experiences can be bundled together, in what most people would group as one type of loss.Loss #18 of 101 - Loss of a full term baby. In this episode we chat to the lovely Katie Joy Duke, all the way from north of Seattle. Katie unexpectedly went from being a girlfriend, to a fiancé, to a pregnant mother in 72 hours, caught up in a magical whirlwind of suddenly getting married and preparing for the birth of their daughter, Poppy. After an uneventful pregnancy, and labour starting exactly when it was supposed to, Katie and her husband headed to the hospital, only to hear the awful words no parent wants to hear - 'Katie, we can't find a heartbeat.'Although Katie got to meet her daughter, she sadly wasn't alive, and Katie has done all she can over the last six years to give Poppy's short life meaning. Poppy's life has taught Katie more than she ever thought it could about forgiveness, the beauty and power of a life never lived outside the womb, and the complications of initial grief and secondary loss.Katie has processed a lot of her grief journey through writing and is keen to share that with others, especially other mums who will also hear those heart-breaking words. Her memoir, 'Still Breathing: My Journey with Love, Loss, and Reinvention', is due to be published in May 2022.  For more about Katie and to sign up to her author newsletter visit: https://www.katiejoyduke.com/Or find her on social media: https://www.instagram.com/katiejoyduke https://www.facebook.com/katie.duke.351https://www.linkedin.com/in/katiedukecoaching/Send us Fan MailSupport the show-----thesilentwhy.com  |  Instagram  |  Facebook  |  Twitter  |  LinkedIn What's a Herman? / Buy a Herman - thehermancompany.comSupport the show: buymeacoffee.com/thesilentwhySign-up to my mailing list (only used for sharing news occasionally!): thesilentwhy.com/newsletterHow to talk to the grieving:  thesilentwhy.com/post/howtotalktothegrievingReview the show: Apple Podcasts  |  Spotify  |  GoodpodsEpisode transcripts: thesilentwhy.buzzsprout.comThank you for listening.
