from Liveng Proof Podcast · host Engrid Latina: Entrepreneur, Fitness Trainer and Blogger
Today’s episode is one for the record books! I’m chatting with Alison Canavan. This lady’s multidimensional story and eloquent delivery, left me feeling mesmerized & inspired. Alison was catapulted onto the international stage at the tender age of 15 when she represented Ireland in the Supermodel of the World competition in Las Vegas. This spawned a nearly 22 year career in the fashion industry, which has taken her to the main fashion capitals of the world. More recently, Alison has devoted her time to her greatest passion: true health and wellbeing. She is now a UCLA trained Mindfulness Facilitator from The Semel Institute of neuroscience and human behavior. She is an award winning author of the wellness book “Minding Mum”. Additionally Alison is a health and wellness coach, Master NLP Practitioner (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and International motivational speaker. She graduated with distinction in Nutrition and Health Coaching from Irish Institute of Nutrition and Health (IINH). She holds an Advanced Diploma in Diet and Nutrition therapeutics. Additionally, she has a Raw Foods Mastery level 3 where she studied at The Life Change Health Institute. She also holds a diploma in PR, Marketing and Sales management from DBS and has studied business in The National College of Ireland NCI. It’s no surprise that Alison has become a highly sought after motivational speaker. She spoke at The Mindful Life Conference in Washington in April 2017. And has lectured at Trinity College on the module of Motherhood and Mental Health. Presently, Alison has a weekly wellness column called ‘NIRVANA’ in The ‘Sunday Independent’ and a column in ‘Positive Life Magazine’. She has contributed to numerous publications throughout the years including You Magazine, VIP Magazine, The Daily Mail, Pregnancy and Parenting and many more. She is also a regular contributor to radio and TV shows. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: Being seen through fresh eyes for who she’s become, not who she was It’s an inside out world, and how her branding reflects this Going within everyday is the most important thing we can do for ourselves Not knowing you have lived through a Trauma The recent Michael Jackson documentary The experience of trauma that comes when you become aware of the suffering you endured Ask not why the addiction – but why the PAIN Not minimizing/ comparing our own trauma Dr. Gabor Maté – There is no such thing as blame Her concern with how we are talking about taxic male culture – instilling fear with this “us against them” mentality The Kindness Diaries on Netflix Asking for help & being receptive to receiving kindness The judgment she received when she became pregnant, and the self-narrative of doubt that crept into her mind. How the thoughts we tell ourselves create our reality Her experience with postpartum depression Conditional love and how it causes us to not show up as who we really are Her experience feeling unheard and misdiagnosed by doctors during a serious health scare Trusting our intuition over input from external sources How easily we can be swayed away from out deep inner knowing – and begin to question to ourselves Her career as an international model starting at age 15 Eventually waking up to realizing her own body dysmorphia Her years partying – because it was the only thing that made her feel alive, connected, and a sense of release Going to AA – after several near death experiences. Making the switch from choosing recovery for her child, to doing it for herself Starting to like herself and have feelings for her self How our culture reveres pregnant women – but post-birth that reverence switches to the child and the mom is cast aside so to speak. Her call to nurture our mothers, as this will naturally lead them to nurture their babies How relationships are essential to our overall health and well-being How we’ve almost swung too far in the opposite direction when it comes to self-care/mindfulness – where we are talking about it so much but not necessarily practicing it The intention of mindfulness and meditation is to bring back what we naturally have. Having an equanimous mind: not wishing for the bad times to go and the good times to stay Not medicating our emotions and feelings away. We need to accept all of who we are, in order to truly heal. Emotions have a life of about 90 seconds, when we acknowledge them. How children mirror our Central Nervous System Unplugging your Wi-Fi at night to reduce stress Changing your state with movement (dance, shaking it out, jump etc.) It’s okay to cry and not identify the reason you are crying (we can release the pressure of needing to understand our emotions).
