Madagascar's Famine: The Nationalist Resistance Strategy of the 1940s

In the 1940s, Malagasy nationalists faced a dilemma: French colonial rule was entrenched, and open revolt seemed impossible. Their solution was a calculated economic weapon — a widespread refusal to grow cash crops for export, particularly rice and coffee, to starve the colonial economy.
