Manager Appraisal of Artificial Intelligence Investments (Queiroz et al., 2024)

from Revise and Resubmit - The Mayukh Show · host Mayukh Mukhopadhyay

Welcome to Revise and Resubmit, the podcast that takes you into the heart of groundbreaking academic research, where complex ideas shape the future of business, technology, and innovation. Today, we’re diving into one of the most significant developments in modern management—artificial intelligence—and how managers assess the risks and rewards of AI investments. Our featured article, 'Manager Appraisal of Artificial Intelligence Investments', is authored by Magno Queiroz, Abhijith Anand, and Aaron Baird. Published on September 4, 2024, in the Journal of Management Information Systems, this research is housed in one of the world’s top-tier publications—an FT50 journal, which places it in the prestigious list of the top 50 business journals globally, as recognized by the Financial Times. Published by Routledge, the Journal of Management Information Systems is at the forefront of technology management research. In this article, the authors tackle an increasingly critical question: How do managers decide whether or not to invest in AI? While AI has the potential to create immense value through task augmentation and automation, these investments come with risks and uncertainties. The study introduces a new AI classification system based on two dimensions—action autonomy and learning autonomy—providing a framework to help managers assess the level of autonomy AI systems have. The authors also explore how managers’ delegation preferences and time-based decision-making influence their appraisal of AI investments, offering a theoretical platform for future research. We’d like to extend our thanks to Magno Queiroz, Abhijith Anand, and Aaron Baird for their insightful research, and to the Routledge for publishing this important study in such a highly respected journal. So, the question we leave you with today is this—how will AI investments shape the future of business, and can managers truly balance the promise of AI with its inherent risks? Let’s find out.
