Our featured article, 'Manager Appraisal of Artificial Intelligence Investments', is authored by Magno Queiroz, Abhijith Anand, and Aaron Baird. In this article, the authors tackle an increasingly critical question: How do managers decide whether or not to invest in AI? While AI has the potential to create immense value through task augmentation and automation, these investments come with risks and uncertainties. The study introduces a new AI classification system based on two dimensions—action autonomy and learning autonomy—providing a framework to help managers assess the level of autonomy AI systems have. The authors also explore how managers’ delegation preferences and time-based decision-making influence their appraisal of AI investments, offering a theoretical platform for future research.
