Marching with MLK

from Tea With George · host George Caylor, Diane Gruber, Steve Putney

Jan 19 Marching with Dr KingToday is Martin Luther King Day. That has something to do with me because in 1964 I marched with him. I was a waiter in Atlantic City trying to earn money for college. That summer as I look back on it seemed like the movie "Forrest Gump." All kinds of things happened that summer, and I was witness to it. I met Bobby Kennedy who gave me tickets to the Democrat Convention. I met many celebrities while working room-service. The next day a black friend/fellow waiter asked, "George do you want to do something interesting this afternoon?" I said "sure, what is it?" "Dr. King is in town. We're going to protest the racist platform of the Democrat Party at the  convention. Would you like to protest with us?" I said "sure, I'd like to meet him."  After lunch we gathered outside the convention center and Dr. King showed up. There may have been 200 of us. First thing he asked us was, "Who doesn't have $2?" I thought, "Ugh, collection!" Then he said "Whoever doesn't have $2, I'll give you $2. That way you can't be convicted of vagrancy." (I thought, wow, that's something.) He said, "Who has a sign? Let me see the signs." A bunch of signs were held up. He pointed at maybe a dozen of them and said, "Put them down, you're not taking them. There's vulgarity on their signs. You're also not allowed to say anything vulgar, and if somebody hits you, you're not allowed to hit them back. We're here to protest the racist platform of the Democrats in this convention. We want to be the good guys." As I look back, it was important. At the time it was just something to do, but you know that's how life works out. You never know what's important and what's not, until years later.
