Matthew Chapter 24: Bible Study by Atheists

from Sacrilegious Discourse - Bible Study for Atheists · host Husband & Wife

Jesus leaves the temple, threatens its destruction, and launches into an exhausting Matthew 24 end-times prophecy packed with wars, earthquakes, famines, false messiahs, falling stars, trumpet-blasting angels, vultures, terrified pregnant people, and enough apocalyptic imagery to make Ghostbusters seem like a sober documentary. The problem? Jesus repeatedly makes it sound like this cosmic catastrophe is happening within his own generation. “This generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened” is remarkably specific for a prophecy Christians have spent roughly 2,000 years rescheduling. The hosts dig into the conveniently post-event prediction of the temple’s destruction, the borrowed imagery from Daniel, the vague “wars and rumors of wars” routine, and Christianity’s endless ability to declare every earthquake, conflict, eclipse, or unpleasant news cycle a sign that Jesus is finally packing his bags. Things wander gloriously off-script into period-pain simulators, fracking-induced earthquakes, 28 Days Later, 12 Monkeys, Dora the Explorer’s ability to locate Jesus, Scarlett Johansson’s mouth-based card trick, Coraline, Other Mommy, succubi, and the correct scheduling protocol for the apocalypse: preferably a Monday in summer. Eventually, the comedy gives way to a serious discussion about Christian nationalism, patriarchal pastors, attacks on women’s rights, child marriage laws, and the terrifying belief that morality only exists because God is threatening to punish everyone. Jesus closes the chapter by comparing himself to a surprise home invader and promising that disobedient servants will be cut into pieces and sent somewhere filled with weeping and gnashing of teeth.
