Sacrilegious Discourse - Bible Study for Atheists

by Husband & Wife

Husband and Wife are two non-believers who have always wanted to read the Bible. Why would we subject ourselves to this you might ask? From our perspective it helps us understand where the Christians around us, here in the Midwest, are coming from when they quote the Bible at us. Husband is basically an Atheist and wife leans Agnostic but mostly Atheist and we’re just having some fun at the Bible’s expense while learning more about what our neighbors claim we’re going to hell over. Episodes

  1. Mark Chapter 5 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus casts thousands of demons into 2,000 pigs, sends them hurtling into the sea, and somehow we're supposed to believe this is just a heartwarming miracle story? Mark Chapter 5 has a hell of a lot more going on than supernatural pest control. In this Q&A episode of Sacrilegious Discourse…

    more
  2. Mark Chapter 4 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus is back with more parables, more confused disciples, and apparently a personal vendetta against straightforward communication. In this Mark Chapter 4 Q&A, we dig deeper into the Parable of the Sower, aka Jesus throwing theological spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks, and ask an...

  3. Mark Chapter 5: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus gets out of the damn boat, and Mark Chapter 5 immediately goes completely off the rails. A man living among the tombs is supposedly possessed by so many demons that they collectively introduce themselves as “Legion.” Jesus casts them out, gives them permission to invade a nearby herd of...

  4. Mark Chapter 4: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus is back, he’s on a boat, and apparently nobody told him that “sowing your seed” hits a little differently in 2026. Mark Chapter 4 launches into the Parable of the Sower, where seeds land on paths, rocks, thorns, and good soil... and somehow humanity gets blamed for God apparently being...

  5. Mark Chapters 1 - 3 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Mark wastes absolutely no time. No baby Jesus. No wise men. No genealogy. We start with John the Baptist dunking people in the Jordan, an alleged quotation from Isaiah that also contains Malachi, and Jesus getting baptized before launching straight into demons, healings, disciples, and religious...

  6. Mark Chapter 3: Bible Study by Atheists

Mark 3 opens with Jesus healing a man’s shriveled hand on the Sabbath, which apparently is a capital offense when you’re surrounded by religious rule-enforcers who think picking up sticks deserves death, but miracle-working gets a special theological loophole. The Pharisees respond to a supposed...

  7. Mark Chapter 2: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus returns home to Capernaum, and because the healed leper from Chapter 1 couldn't keep his mouth shut, the house is packed wall-to-wall with people. Enter four wildly dedicated friends who decide the front door is for quitters: they haul a paralyzed man up to the roof, literally dig a hole...

  8. Mark Chapter 1: Bible Study by Atheists

Mark skips the virgin birth, the manger, and Baby Jesus entirely because apparently nobody has time for a backstory. Mark 1:1–45 throws us directly into John the Baptist dunking people in the Jordan, Jesus receiving the Holy Spirit like a divine software update, and Satan tempting him in the...

  9. Introduction to The Gospel of Mark: Bible Study by Atheists

Welcome to Marky Mark and the Synoptic Bunch, the earliest, shortest, and apparently most plagiarized Gospel in the New Testament. Before tackling Chapter 1, Husband and Wife investigate who actually wrote the Gospel of Mark. Spoiler: the text never identifies its author, “According to Mark” was...

  10. Matthew Contradictions Part 2

Matthew’s contradictions are back for Part 2, because apparently one theological pileup wasn’t enough. This time, Wife and Husband tackle whether Jesus is God, whether God can be tempted, and why Jesus speaks to God like they are separate people before turning around and exercising powers...

  11. Matthew Contradictions Part 1

Matthew finally ends (sort of...), but its contradictions apparently reproduce faster than Christians at a Quiverfull convention. After digging through more than 160 possible conflicts, Wife narrows the theological pileup to 14 questions for Part 1. Is Jesus a peacemaker, or did he come bearing a...

  12. Matthew Wrap Up: And Q&A for Chapter 28

Matthew finally ends, and somehow its last 20 verses manage to cram in earthquakes, angels, an empty tomb, bribed guards, resurrected Jesus, doubting apostles, divine authority, the Great Commission, the beginnings of Christian separation from Judaism, and enough theological duct tape to keep...

  13. Matthew Chapter 27 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Judas hangs himself, Pilate washes his hands, Jesus gets crucified, dead saints start wandering around Jerusalem, and somehow Matthew 27 still has time to squeeze in a questionable prophecy citation and one of the ugliest seeds of Christian antisemitism. This Q&A digs into Judas’s sudden remorse,...

  14. Matthew Chapter 28: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus is dead, the tomb is sealed, guards are posted, and Matthew 28 opens by immediately throwing an earthquake, a glowing angel, terrified soldiers, and a missing corpse into the mix. Mary Magdalene and “the other Mary” arrive at the tomb, get informed that Jesus has risen, and then promptly…

  15. Matthew Chapter 27: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew 27 wastes absolutely no time turning the Passion narrative into one of the strangest chapters we’ve encountered yet. Judas suddenly realizes that betraying Jesus was, in fact, a betrayal, returns his thirty pieces of silver, and hangs himself. The priests respond to this moral catastrophe...

  16. Matthew Chapter 26 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew 26 is where the Jesus story finally starts cashing all those prophecy checks it’s been writing for 25 chapters, and somehow the theological accounting gets even messier. We kick things off by correcting ourselves about the authorship of Matthew, because unlike certain ancient religious...

  17. Matthew Chapter 25 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Ten virgins walk into a parable, five forget their oil, and somehow the moral is not “maybe share your damn oil.” Welcome back to Matthew 25, where Jesus continues the Olivet Discourse with wedding attendants, an absentee rich guy handing servants enormous piles of money, and a final judgment…

  18. Matthew Chapter 26: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus is only days away from getting crucified in Matthew 26, so naturally the chapter begins with murder plots, an extremely expensive bottle of perfume being dumped on his head, and Jesus basically telling everyone, “The poor will still be here later. Right now, focus on me.” Coming immediately...

  19. Matthew Chapter 25: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus apparently decided the best way to explain spiritual preparedness was with ten virgins waiting around for one extremely late bridegroom. Five bring extra lamp oil, five do not, and the unprepared women get locked out of the party because nothing says divine wisdom like an ancient...

  20. Matthew Chapter 24 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus leaves the Jerusalem Temple, climbs the Mount of Olives, and suddenly transforms from wandering moral teacher into a full-blown apocalyptic street preacher. In this Matthew 24 atheist Bible podcast breakdown, we unpack the Olivet Discourse, the destruction of Jerusalem, the “abomination…

  21. Matthew Chapter 23 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus has officially abandoned the “gentle teacher with some interesting parables” routine and entered his public-humiliation era. In this Matthew 23 Q&A, we dig into one of the harshest chapters in the New Testament, where Jesus unloads seven-ish woes on the scribes and Pharisees, calls them...

  22. Matthew Chapter 24: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus leaves the temple, threatens its destruction, and launches into an exhausting Matthew 24 end-times prophecy packed with wars, earthquakes, famines, false messiahs, falling stars, trumpet-blasting angels, vultures, terrified pregnant people, and enough apocalyptic imagery to make…

  23. Matthew Chapter 23: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus apparently woke up in Matthew 23 and chose theological violence. Gone is the soft-focus, lamb-hugging savior from the church murals. This Jesus spends nearly the entire chapter calling the Pharisees hypocrites, blind fools, snakes, vipers, filthy cups, whitewashed tombs, and children of…

  24. Matthew Chapter 22 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus is back with another cheerful little parable in Matthew 22. This time featuring a royal wedding, murdered messengers, a burned city, and one underdressed guest getting bound up and tossed into the darkness. Nothing says “loving invitation from God” quite like accepting the RSVP under threat...

  25. Matthew Chapter 21 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus rolls into Jerusalem on a donkey... or possibly two donkeys, depending on how badly Matthew understood Hebrew poetry; and immediately begins speed-running his transformation from wandering preacher to full-blown religious provocateur. In this Matthew 21 Q&A, we dig into the triumphal entry,...

  26. 10 Facts That Sink Noah’s Ark

Noah’s Ark has everything a good myth needs: divine rage, mass extinction, a magic boat, incest-based repopulation, and absolutely no concern for animal waste management. Unfortunately for biblical literalists, it also has more holes than the boat probably would have. This week, Husband brings…

  27. Matthew Chapter 22: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus kicks off Matthew 22 with the heartwarming tale of a royal wedding where people decline an invitation, murder the messengers, have their city burned down, and then watch some random guy get tied up and thrown into darkness for wearing the wrong outfit. Nothing says “loving kingdom of…

  28. Matthew Chapter 21: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew 21 comes in hot with Jesus rolling into Jerusalem on what appears to be a very questionably acquired donkey-and-colt combo, because apparently “the Lord needs them” counts as a valid rental agreement now. The hosts tear into the whole triumphant-entry scene, from cloak carpets to prophecy...

  29. Matthew Chapters 19-20 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew 19 and 20 are back on the chopping block, and this Q&A episode gets messy fast. We dig into Jesus’s takes on divorce, celibacy, wealth, eternal life, and labor fairness, only to find out that “Little Maddie” is once again doing the absolute most to make the Pharisees look like...

  30. A Godless Thank You Episode

This one isn’t a Bible breakdown, a theological roast, or another round of “why is God like this?” Instead, it’s something way rarer for Sacrilegious Discourse: a sincere, emotional, fireworks-in-the-background thank you to the patrons who stepped up when life got brutally real. After months of…

  31. Matthew Chapter 20: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus opens Matthew 20:1–16 with a vineyard parable that somehow turns the kingdom of heaven into the world’s most infuriating payroll dispute. Workers who sweat through the entire day receive the same wage as the people who clocked in for the final hour, and when they complain, the boss…

    more
  32. Matthew Chapter 19: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus enters Matthew 19 ready to tackle divorce, marriage, celibacy, children, wealth, eternal life, and the surprisingly elaborate seating arrangements of heaven. The result is a theological grab bag in which women remain property, rich people are basically screwed, and the apostles discover…

    more
  33. Matthew Chapters 17-18 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew 17 crams nearly every piece of Christian branding into one theological clown car. Jesus glows like a freshly polished Transformer, Moses and Elijah materialize for an unexplained mountaintop crossover episode, and God interrupts Peter before he can turn the Transfiguration into a…

  34. Matthew Chapter 18: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus kicks off Matthew 18 by telling grown adults they need to become like little children to enter heaven, which immediately raises questions about humility, obedience, and why religion is so obsessed with keeping believers childlike. From there, things escalate quickly: millstones, drowning,...

  35. Matthew Chapter 17: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain for Matthew 17, then suddenly starts glowing like a radioactive Transformer while Moses and Elijah appear for history’s strangest theological tea party. God joins by cloud-based conference call, Peter offers to build ghost tents, and the disciples...

  36. Matthew Chapter 16 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew 16 is where the Gospel slams the narrative gas pedal and starts steering Jesus directly toward Jerusalem, suffering, and death. The miracles begin taking a back seat, the mood gets darker, and Jesus starts demanding that everyone finally decide who they think he is. Naturally, this…

  37. Matthew Chapters 14-15 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Herod’s family tree is less a tree and more an incestuous wreath, and Matthew 14 drops us directly into the royal disaster. We untangle Herod Antipas, Herodias, Philip, Salome, a politically inconvenient John the Baptist, and the birthday party that ends with a prophet’s head arriving on a…

  38. Matthew Chapter 16: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew 16 opens with the Pharisees and Sadducees asking Jesus for a sign, only to get vague weather talk, a cryptic reference to Jonah, and the theological equivalent of “figure it out yourselves.” Then the disciples forget bread, again, while Jesus warns them about the “yeast” of religious...

  39. Matthew Chapter 15: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew 15 comes in swinging with Jesus getting called out by the Pharisees because his disciples apparently don’t wash their hands before eating. And honestly? For once, the Pharisees had a point. Instead of answering the very reasonable “Hey, why are your followers being gross?” question, Jesus...

  40. Matthew Chapter 14: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew 14 comes in swinging with palace drama, horny birthday promises, and one extremely grim party favor: John the Baptist’s head on a platter. Herod hears about Jesus doing miracle stuff and immediately assumes John has risen from the dead, which is awkward, because the chapter then…

  41. Matthew Chapter 13 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew 13 is basically Jesus standing in a field, pointing at seeds, weeds, yeast, fish, and treasure like, “Behold, theology!” But in this Q&A episode, the hosts dig into why these parables may not be quite as stupid as they first sounded, annoying, yes, but weirdly clever once you understand…

  42. Matthew Chapters 11-12 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew 11–12 is where Jesus stops being “wandering miracle guy” and starts giving full “I’m in charge now” energy. This Q&A digs into John the Baptist asking whether Jesus is actually the Messiah, the weird “Kingdom of Heaven” language that probably does not mean cartoon cloud heaven, and why...

  43. Matthew Chapter 13: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew 13 is basically Jesus’ TED Talk from a boat, except instead of “ideas worth spreading,” we get seeds, weeds, yeast, fish, treasure, pearls, and enough “good is good, bad is bad” energy to make a children’s morality poster feel overqualified. The hosts dig into the Parable of the Sower…

  44. Matthew Chapter 12: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew Chapter 12 rolls in hot with Jesus and the disciples casually plucking grain on the Sabbath, which sounds harmless until you remember God once got extremely murdery about Sabbath rule-breaking. The Pharisees object, Jesus fires back with David eating forbidden bread, and the hosts...

  45. Matthew Chapter 11: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew Chapter 11 comes in hot with John the Baptist sitting in jail like, “Okay, but is this actually the Messiah or should we keep shopping?” Which immediately raises the very reasonable question: if miracles, healings, exorcisms, and magic-adjacent nonsense were apparently happening…

  46. Matthew Chapters 9-10 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew Chapters 9–10 crank the New Testament weirdness machine up another notch, and this Q&A episode digs into every “wait, what the hell?” moment. We’re talking Jesus forgiving sins before healing paralysis, tax collectors with collaborator vibes, bleeding women trapped in purity-law hell…

  47. Matthew Chapter 8 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew Chapter 8 gets the Q&A treatment, and apparently this chapter is less “gentle Jesus meek and mild” and more “propaganda speed-run with a side of drowned livestock.” In this episode, we dig into Matthew 8, including Jesus healing the leper, praising a Roman centurion, calming a storm, and...

  48. Matthew Chapter 10: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew Chapter 10 is where Jesus stops being a solo miracle worker and starts assembling his supernatural street team, the twelve disciples, now unofficially rebranded as the Tucci Gang Demon Hunters. He gives them authority to drive out demons, heal diseases, raise the dead, cleanse leprosy…

  49. Matthew Chapter 9: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew Chapter 9 is basically Jesus speed-running miracles like he’s trying to unlock every achievement before dinner. Paralytic guy? Healed. Tax collector? Recruited. Bleeding woman? Fixed by cloak-contact. Dead girl? “She’s just asleep,” apparently. Blind men? Sight restored. Mute man? Demon...

  50. Matthew Chapter 8: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew Chapter 8 is where Little Maddie stops being a sermon-heavy morality lecture and turns into a full-blown supernatural roadshow. Jesus comes down from the mountain, immediately starts healing people, and somehow everyone acts like this is normal. We get a man with leprosy being declared...
