The Ancient Greeks dedicated May to Artemis, the goddess of fecundity. The Christians improved this practice by honoring the truly Mother of God. The idea of a month dedicated specifically to Mary is traced back to Baroque times. The custom became widespread during the nineteenth century and remains in practice until today.Many faithful erect a special altar with a statue or picture of Mary as a reminder. It's a tribute to her beauty and virtue. It's also a standing tradition to crown the statue of Mary — a custom known as May Crowning. Mary, cause of our joy, is everyone's mother.
