Irene von Hennigs, Pharma D who is Vice President Medical Affairs at ChemoCentryx talks about her journey and specifically about medical affairs. She is been in the pharma industry and medical affairs for a period of 26 years. While in her consulting career she started her own company partnering with pharmaceutical companies and ChemoCentryx was one of them. There are pros and cons to consulting versus being on board, consulting business was at first for her, and held that position for about six months in ChemoCentryx. She was keen on building medical affairs and fascinated by the science of it. A pertinent question was asked - how do you build a medical affairs team? - on this, the expert answered it depends on the structures, procedures, priorities, and recruitment ( building the team and bringing in the right individuals) She mentioned the process of the structure that has been undertaken by the organization. The one-word answer was 'data', she also mentioned usage of clinical trials data and extracting it, but the prominent part is the right minds putting the effort while finding and training such minds enables building a strong team. The complement science, also known as complement cascade, is a part of the immune system that enhances (complements) the ability of antibodies and phagocytic cells to clear microbes and damaged cells from an organism, promote inflammation, or immune oneself from the infection. They then talked about building relationships and healthcare is a relationship business for eg., physician relationship with the patient, company's relationship with the physician, etc. Speaking of relationship-building she explained about the company focusing on various databases like publications, speaking engagement, medical leadership, academic institutions, centers of excellence for disease state and one can compile a list for this purpose. Collecting and forming a certain list is performed by any company however giving a human touch and tweaking the list is of utmost importance for building relationships thereon. In the mid-segment, it was asked how GDPR impacts the formation of the company, and the regulatory side was discussed.
