Medicare's New $50 Bridge Program: A Doctor Explains Who Qualifies

from Obesity: The War Within · host Brian Samuel, MD

Something changed on July 1st, and most people on Medicare still haven't heard about it. Medicare's new GLP-1 Bridge program covers certain GLP-1 medications for weight for a flat $50 a month, now through December 31, 2027. In this video, I walk you through how the program works, who qualifies, who doesn't, and exactly what to do at your next doctor's appointment.I'm Dr. Brian Samuel, a physician board certified in obesity medicine and family medicine. I make videos that explain your body in plain English, without shame and without hype.WHO QUALIFIESYou must be 18 or older, have Medicare drug coverage (a standalone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage), and meet ONE of these:BMI of 35 or higherBMI between 30 and 34.99, plus at least one of these conditions:Diastolic heart failure (heart failure with preserved ejection fraction)Uncontrolled high blood pressureChronic kidney disease, stage 3a or higherPrediabetesA previous heart attack or strokeBlocked arteries in your legs or arms (peripheral artery disease) with symptomsBMI between 27 and 29.99, plus at least one of these:PrediabetesA previous heart attack or strokeBlocked arteries in your legs or arms with symptomsWHO DOES NOT QUALIFYYou already get a GLP-1 medication covered through your Medicare drug plan (keep getting it the way you do now — don't change anything)You have type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease (your regular Part D plan may cover a GLP-1 for those conditions instead)You have Medicare but no drug coverage (you may be able to add a drug plan during an enrollment period)You're under 18COVERED MEDICATIONSWegovy (injection or tablet)Zepbound (KwikPen only — single-dose vials are NOT covered)Foundayo (tablet)COSTA flat $50 copay per one-month supply, no matter the dose.
