We need to check how a child is developing mentally and understand better the range of mental illnesses. Recognised mental states such as autism and downs syndrome are not understood by the majority of people. There is an overarching lack of understanding about the role mental health plays in developing the whole person. Not naming mental illnesses appropriately means there is a delay in identifying differing illnesses and any assessment and treatments. In Malawi, mental health is a critical issue because people are subject to many stresses such as poverty. Poverty plays a huge part in peoples understanding of mental health when you are trying to survive on a day to day basis mental health looks very different. When mental health is woven within the context of poverty then the Government must be prepared to put in place and offer structures and services. If a diagnosis is made there must be something to offer as a way forward otherwise the diagnosis has no value.
