Metrics & Communication with Dave Komendat

It's tough to measure things that don't happen, especially in dollars and cents, but a quantitative approach and well-honed communication skills go a long way. This week, we chat with Dave Komendat, a retired vice president and chief security officer for Boeing and a member of the inaugural Hall of Fame Speaker series at our Thought Leaders Conference last fall. We're also joined by IHS Program Executive Scott McHugh and IHS Coordinator Shelby Payne.

An episode of the Structurally Sound - Institute for Homeland Security podcast, hosted by mjf023, titled "Metrics & Communication with Dave Komendat" was published on January 14, 2026 and runs 43 minutes.

Concrete Causation Roland Pöllinger In his study of causation J. L. Mackie once referred back to David Hume, who listed causation among one of the principles that are TO US THE CEMENT OF THE UNIVERSE and thus OF VAST CONSEQUENCE IN THE SCIENCE OF HUMAN NATURE (David Hume, AN ABSTRACT OF A “TREATISE OF HUMAN NATURE”). Yet for example the early endeavours of the developers of the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) framework, which aimed at embedding causal meaning into the formal treatment, seem to be neglected, and David Lewis' counterfactual analysis of causation based on his possible worlds semantics does not come very handy for application. As Judea Pearl summarises: WE ARE WITNESSING ONE OF THE MOST BIZARRE CIRCLES IN THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE: CAUSALITY IN SEARCH OF A LANGUAGE AND, SIMULTANEOUSLY, THE LANGUAGE OF CAUSALITY IN SEARCH OF ITS MEANING (Judea Pearl, CAUSALITY, 2000). Borrowing mathematical rigour from statistics, one of the most prominent areas of causal modelling today sounds out the interaction of probabi This is What Democracy Sounds Like Metropolitan Congregations United This is What Democracy Sounds Like is a presentation of Metropolitan Congregations United in St. Louis, MO. Community Crunch Molly Touchie This research seeks to glean insights into Community Food Centres (CFCs), social enterprises, and other food security innovations in Ontario through Zoom interviews with CFC staff and board members. By studying CFCs, including their innovations, possibilities, and limitations, I hope to examine pathways for structural change to address hunger, racism, social isolation, and food insecurity.
