Imagine you’re lying in bed recuperating after a series of extensive cosmetic surgeries. Every inch of your face hurts from a full facelift, your breathing is strained, and you drift in and out of consciousness. As if you weren’t already vulnerable enough, recovery from eyelid surgery involves having your eyes taped shut for about 10 days. In April 2007 that was the exact situation 51-year-old Michele MacNeill found herself in. The Utah mother of eight was prescribed an array of sedating prescription pills to treat her pain and swelling. Back home after an overnight hospital stay, Michele felt a little better in her own bed. Her loved ones assumed she’d be back to feeling like her cheerful self in no time.
