Microbiomes Part 2
from The Health and Sport Show
Tom creates his sequel to all you need to know about your microbiome by looking at what can cause disruption to your gut health. KEY TAKEAWAYS Poor diet is the main problem for healthy gut flora. It means we are not getting sufficient vitamins and minerals (micronutrients) to keep our body in good condition, and also these foods can harm the microbiome and the structures of the gut, resulting in increased inability to absorb these nutrients when they are ingested. Do not eat calorie rich and nutrient poor processed foods. Additives such as emulsifying agents (polysorbate80, carboxymethyl cellulose and carogenin) should be avoided. They dissolve the mucus barrier that protects the gut lining and absorbs nutrients and also removes the habitat for your healthy gut flora. Artificial sweeteners (aspartame, acesulfame, neosulfame, saccharine, sucralase) cause changes in the microbiome that are similar to an obese type 2 diabetic. Medications such as PPI and H2 blocker acid inhibitors, statins and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have a negative effect on the gut. Antibiotics are medicines that inhibit growth or destroy microorganisms. They destroy both good and bad bacteria. Herbicides and pesticides specifically glyphosates are prevalent in our environment and directly destroy good gut flora. Chlorinated water causes damage to the mucous membrane which houses our friendly bacterias and facilitates nutrient absorption. C-section birth. These babies don’t get natural exposure and thus adopt their mothers microbiome. Formula feeding also does not provide this. Also sterile environments can work against us gaining good bacteria. BEST MOMENTS ‘This also leaves our gut open to damage causing inflammation as well. And if this happens over a long period of time this can potentially lead to gastrointestinal issues such as leaky gut syndrome.’ ‘Drug companies are not currently required to disclose what effect their medications have on the microbiome, so therefore these are just the medications that we currently know about. There’s bound to be a hell of a lot more that we will discover over time.’ ‘A study was carried out on the desert rat which is able to eat something called the creosote bush which is highly poisonous to almost everything except for this specific species of rat. But after one course of antibiotics the rats could no longer eat the creosote bush.’ ‘You then unpack this poo and you, of course, stick it in a blender. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? I’m never buying a second hand blender again.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://youtube.com/channel/UCQXAka99a6MdZexeEJaMZbAhttps://m.facebook.com/elevatehealthuk/https://www.elevatehealthuk.com/https://instagram.com/elevate_healthuk?utm_medium=copy_link ABOUT THE HOST TOM BUTTERFIELD I have always been interested in sports, unfortunately injuries and poor training decisions curtailed my dream of becoming a professional football player.
