It’s the concept of a decision calculus, introduced by John D.C. Little in his paper 'Models and Managers: The Concept of a Decision Calculus.' In this episode, we’ll explore Little’s critique of the disconnect between complex management models and the people who actually use them: the managers. Little believed models needed to be more than just theoretical constructs; they had to be simple, robust, and easy to understand. He used an advertising budgeting model to show how management science could bridge this gap. But here’s the twist. In 2004, Little revisited his work and reflected on how things had changed.
