Jan 21 Monroe's defense of AmericaA lot of people aren't familiar with the Monroe Doctrine. President James Monroe wrote the Doctrine as a commitment to neutrality in European affairs, in exchange for Europe's refraining from further colonization in the New World.  It was transformed by Teddy Roosevelt into unlimited writ of authority to intervene in Latin America and overseas affairs. And the Monroe Doctrine embodied the prudent foreign policy of the founders, non-interventionalists. The Monroe Doctrine embodied the prudent foreign policy of the founders. We won't intervene in other countries. It's in the sphere of our interests. Monroe was actually a pacifist. He said, "Wars between European powers are matters relating to themselves, and it doesn't favor our policy to get involved. It is only when our rights are invaded or seriously menaced that we resent injuries and make preparation for our defense. With the movements in this hemisphere, we are of necessity more immediately connected and by causes which must be obvious to all enlightened and impartial observers. We owe it therefore to declare that foreign powers cannot interfere with the Americas."Russia, China, and Iran have been working with the Venezuelan dictators now for two decades. And by the way, they never paid us when they took over our gas companies, when they took over our oil companies. And that oil and those companies are still ours.
