Monte Serrat

from Audio guide de Santos-SP · host Seectur-Santos

You are standing before one of the city's most emblematic landmarks: Monte Serrat. Right next to the entrance is the historic Itororó Fountain. At the beginning of the 20th century, the water that flowed down the hill helped supply Santos, transforming the place into a meeting point for the population. The ascent can be made via the 402 steps of the staircase or by the traditional Funicular Railway, inaugurated in 1927 and still powered by cables and counterweights today. Along the staircase, in addition to residents' houses and smallestablishments that support those who make the journey on foot, are the niches that represent the Stations of the Cross, reinforcing the religious character of the path to the top. At 157 meters high is the Chapel of Our Lady of Monte Serrat, dedicated to the patron saint of Santos and one of the city's main symbols of faith. Next to it, the old Monte Serrat Casino recalls the elegant times of Santos' social life until gambling was banned in Brazil in 1946. Today, the space has been transformed into a charming venue for events. The viewpoint completes the experience with a 360º panoramic view, allowing you to observe the Historic Center, the estuary, the port and the city's waterfront.
