I am dark, yet lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem, like the tents of Kedar, like the curtains of Solomon. — Song of Solomon 1:5The Shulamite's confession — "I am dark, yet lovely" — speaks the believer's double identity: in myself, thoroughly corrupted by sin; in Christ, altogether beautiful. The beauty is God's splendor bestowed on us, the righteousness of Jesus covering our shame. By His finished work, we are washed, sanctified, justified, and made a royal priesthood called out of darkness into His marvelous light.
