Movement is the Medicine; Pilates' Educator Christi Idavoy on the body as a tool for self-knowing

from Embodied with Anthea Bell · host Anthea Bell

We are joined in this week's episode by a visionary in the realm of mind, body and soul-elevation; Polestar Pilates' Christi Idavoy.  Christi is a movement and mindfulness expert based in the tropical mountains of Costa Rica. Guided by the belief that all bodies are telling a valuable and honest story, she asks us to notice how we feel in the present moment and to find balance by honouring what is.  As a young dancer and philosophy student at NYU, Christi found an instant affinity with the science and practice of yoga.  After her initial training, studying the traditions of Swami Rama, she voyaged to Costa Rica to share her passion for yoga as healing art. Some years later, then an experienced teacher and Masters graduate from the United Nations University for Peace, she came across Pilates.  From there began a 20-year relationship with both the legacy of Joseph Pilates, and with Polestar Pilates International - for whom she is now a Senior Educator and Faculty Director.  Christi describes herself "a teachers' teacher"; cultivating awareness, deep compassion and systemic equilibrium in those she supports. She offers 1:1 training, educational teaching and bespoke, holistic retreats in her verdant homeland of Costa Rica. In our conversation, Christi shares the evolution of her relationship with movement, the body and "being" - in its inner and outer manifestations. She offers deep insight into the lessons nature teaches; why living in tribe is so significant for personal & societal health; and how ultimately, yoga, pilates and wider forms of embodiment act as spiritual gateways - bringing the individual back to themselves, to their connection with the world and to an undefinable, utterly personal higher power.  We learn about her upcoming retreats, her work with Polestar Pilates and the toolkit of connection we can each apply in our daily lives.  A beautiful episode with a truly inspired human; I hope you relish it as much as I did.
