Muslim American Immigrant Identity
from Mommying While Muslim · host Zaiba Hasan & Uzma Jafri
Not all second-generation Americans were encouraged to be overtly “American,” or to adopt the cultural practices that make us unique on the planet: our innate senses of justice, equality, work ethic, and our history of rebellion weren’t exercised and flexed in traditionally Muslim countries, but then our parents came here and some felt slapped in the face by these traits. Others embraced them.Sabeeha Rehman, a grassroots activist, community builder, mother, grandmother, and author joins us today to talk about her mothering journey in America and how that shaped her Muslim American identity as an immigrant to this country. The framework and permissions she gives us may not be for everyone, but they are a relief to others. We welcome the discussion and opportunity to remember that this nation, while in pain right now, is the perfect soil to cultivate an authentic Islam we couldn’t practice anywhere else.Links:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLo9wx_Xj98Sabeeha Rehman on the web and her blog: http://www.sabeeharehman.com/Follow Sabeeha on Twitter @SabeehaRehmanPurchase Threading My Prayer Rug: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1628728620/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1628728620&linkCode=as2&tag=sabeeharehman-20&linkId=fba5c16304c4688ddcdd5f610c222949Web: www.mommyingwhilemuslim.comEmail: [email protected]: Mommying While Muslim page and Mommyingwhilemuslim groupIG: @mommyingwhilemuslimpodcastDid you know you can send us a text?
