Mommying While Muslim

Mommying While Muslim is a one of a kind podcast where American Muslim moms share their experiences to raise second generation kids. Having experienced both pre and post 9/11 America, they're acutely aware of the unique challenges their families face on top of the regular messes that all moms share. Mommying While Muslim is a space to take back their stories, and tell those no one will air on the news or portray fully or fairly in the media. Host Uzma Jafri is mom first, careerwoman second, and global citizen at heart. She meets taboo topics head on because she wasn't allowed to do it growing up, not at home or at school and work. Her aim is to better her immediate household, community, and her momsisterhood the world over by telling the truths sometimes people don't want to face or to hear. Not everyone has these privileges, and she is eager to learn as well as share her own experiences. Always looking to give back, MWM finds women and families who need a mic because no one needs a

SERIES: Seasons of Change: Being a Defiant Working Woman With Dr. Qaali Hussein (And Without DEI!)

"Keep your promises, especially to yourself." That's been the carrot I've been dangling for myself as I put together this May's Season of Change Series for the podcast.First on this month, Dr. Qaali Hussein, double board certified surgeon, whom I've wanted to come on for a long time and couldn't pin down myself, is here to talk about what propelled her work to change, and how she made it happen. What does "defiance" mean to us, why are we afraid of it, and let's just get over our apprehension of it already! We ended up completely ignoring the notes and talked A LOT about DEI and how it misses the trees for the forest (yes, I intended to write it that way). But hey, in the spirit of defiance, it made sense to throw the script out the door and go with the flow. If you're in a season of change or considering one, this episode is for you. Don't forget to check out Defiance Academy and get professional coaching with Dr. Qaali who's opening her first cohort of the year in June.Links:Learn more about Defiance Academy online Find Dr. Qaali on IG @drqaalihusseinDid you know you can send us a text? Resolutions & Reparations

🥳🥳🥳Happy New Year!2025 was hard for me. I'm so grateful for a new year, new slate and I pray yours is even better than I pray for you all. There's a short "episode" today. Big kudos to @faizifortexas running for Texas Comptroller. Do BIG things, y'all, even if you have to do them scared. 🙌🏾🙌🏾⚠⚠ BUT a warning to those in the DMV: Swipe left to witness those closest to Allah, who can't communicate with words. And then listen to what I reported about @rnacoordinates behavior and their refusal to make reasonable, long lasting reparations via @muhsen. Send them a message and find other planners who don't just do their jobs, they care about and practice DEI. Our faith requires that we be DEI, and of course, the West has colonized the term for our way of life. We are all accountable to Allah, especially when we wrong the most vulnerable among us. No, I don't call out women, but I have zero tolerance for those who reject sincere naseeha (advice) and dig deeper into their ignorance. As always, send me your sincere naseeha and feedback. Tune in now and next week. 🎧#doitscared #inclusivity #dei #autismspeaks #savantDid you know you can send us a text? Canceling Cancer in Afghanistan with Wellness Worldwide for Sustainable Communities

🌏Dr. Meena Said discusses the work of her nonprofit, Wellness Worldwide, this week. It provides international tertiary care coordination for terminally ill Afghan children, forgotten by the world along with their nation. "Coordinate" because these kids cannot be treated IN Afghanistan as there is no pediatric cancer center there. Find out why on this episode.⚕️Not only does @wellnessworldwide_ serve dying children, but its field clinic serves a population of 35,000 internally displaced Afghans, mostly women and children, with primary care and surgical follow up, labs and medication. It is also a referral source for the terminally ill children they help coordinate care for. ❤️If you have zakat or sadaqa allocated to Gaza, as you should, please also consider the nonprofits, orgs, and people coming on the podcast this month on our series who work quietly in service of Allah's most ignored creation and causes. This Ramadan may be one of our tightest yet, but if it doesn't hurt to give, we haven't given enough. It's the least we can do as we sit in the comforts of the West that we still have.🎧Tune in at 6pm to learn more and share this episode with someone who can help Meena meet her short and longterm goals for her kids, and to donate to Wellness Worldwide for Sustainable Communities.Links:1. SERIES: Organizations That Increase Khair: Addressing a Need with Elevate Adolescence Programs

Our Series this month is "Organizations That Increase Khair," and we kick it off with Sana Imad of Elevate Adolescence. She's written a curriculum for a character education program designed to help tweens and teens build confidence and reach maturity in a developmentally appropriate way, both spiritually and psychologically. Rooted in Islamic principles and the sage example of Imam Ghazali, the program integrates timeless values like integrity, compassion, and self-discipline into practical life skills.  Through @girlsrisingstrong and @boys.breakingthru, parents and children can achieve deep understanding and connection. One of my favorite pearls from this episode had to be, "It isn't easy, but it gets easiER."  Practice makes perfect, y'all, but we have to be willing to take the first step.Learn more about these programs and how you can bring them to your kitchen tables. Healthy Muslim Marriages

Are we talking about sexuality and intimacy the right way? How we navigate these subjects can make or break our relationships; with our partners, and later on, with our kids if we don't learn how to be sex positive. Too often, these discussions are academic or purely rule-based, leaving little room for emotional depth, vulnerable connection, and the nuanced challenges couples actually face. In this episode, @coachmeganwyatt helps us explore emotionally intelligent thoughts and conversations about sexuality and intimacy. Her approach certainly sheds more light on how we understand marital duties versus rights, and how we spiritually connect with our partners. We also unpack some common marital challenges that cross her professional desk, from mismatched expectations to unspoken needs, and discuss where couples—and even community leaders—go wrong in addressing these issues. This is a conversation you don’t want to miss. The Gender Health Gap Effect on Muslimahs

Dr. Sadaf Lodhi OBGYN is back on the podcast this year to discuss the gender health gap and how it creates even more barriers for women, especially in marginalized communities of Muslim American women: from the Black community to asylees, immigrants, and refugees. Sick women don’t have the luxury of having sex positivity in their homes when their basic needs won’t be met, and are in fact sabotaged by the state. We talk about trauma, cell memory, cultural competency, and funding cuts that directly impact how we fare in the American pseudo-healthcare maze that’s hard to navigate when we DO speak English. No visit with Dr. Sadaf Lodhi is complete without talking about mindset on the path to unlearning guilt and shame, and embracing sex positivity. There’s also lots of good news on the horizon with Dr. Lodhi and we hope you catch it towards the end of this episode. SERIES: Sex Positive Muslim Family: Hot Takes on "Halal Dating"

Y'all know what FEBRUARY means on this podcast: love, sex, and all the stuff we would never discuss in public, but feel safe listening to on a podcast. Whether you listen in private or with a partner, I'm so glad you're here for it. This month's series is "Sex Positive Muslim Family," and I'll go blue in the face asking us to create one.Never been on a halal date? Turns out, most of us have, whether we were old school or modern arranged, met through friends, or online. It's not the oxymoron it first sounded like to an old fogey like me. I challenge listeners to expand our vocabulary and thoughts, but I share all of your "haram reservations."  Let's get uncomfortable together.Mariam Afzal helps redefine "dating" for Generations X and Alpha, bringing home the message that all of it can look and be halal if we, as parents, create safe spaces for our kids. That means holding honest conversations, setting boundaries, and maybe chilling out and remembering that we are not to raise our children as we were raised. Biding the advice of Ali (RA), our children are for a different world, as we were for ours. So let's see how we can navigate this precarious future and keep it halal.Dating, rebellion, parenting genders, birth order, too....we avoided deep dives to stay on track, but I'm sure there will be a couple of new series coming just out of this one episode. SERIES: Expert Muslim Mom Travels: What I Learned About Travel 2024

What Uzma did in 2024 the many times she stepped out on recordings or published late because of jet lag is on this episode. Using real examples from her own journeys last year in the USA, to a whirlwind trip to Europe and a dream Kiwi vacation, unpack the good and the bad in planning trips that met the unique needs of at least one Muslim family. This should sound familiar but there are some tidbits shared based on her 1 year study of travel points and discount travel, and the good stuff is towards the end. You'll find Southwest Airlines mentioned often, but they don't pay us, so boo on them. We also talk credit card travel portals and airport lounges, but that's barely skimming the top of halal and discount traveling, so stay tuned this month to hear experts teach us how to travel so much better than we are now.Excuse the sound of music and pounding feet in the background. The old folks and kids can't hear how loud they are, but that's #momlife #podcastlifeTune in on Apple podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, or head to our website where we also have transcripts available if you're not an iPhone user. Tying the Knot in Faith

Brought to us by Living Our Beliefs podcast, our gracious hosts Meli Solomon melisolomon55 decided to bring together an interfaith discussion on marriage....not the successful ones or bad ones, but the ceremony itself. We were happy to participate and learned a lot about what we have in common. From Living Our Beliefs podcast: Wedding ceremonies are universal and central to many religious and cultural groups. But they vary widely. In this conversation with four guests from different religious traditions – Judaism, Mormonism, Islam and the Baha'i faith – we explore the role of the officiant, who that is, the role of the Divine, contracts and other things. This conversation grew out of the Elevate Podcasting summit hosted by BYU Broadcasting. Steve Perry, host of their In Good Faith podcast, has joined me in co-hosting this discussion.Tune in to learn more at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, or head to our website and share with a friend you know who might like this episode.Did you know you can send us a text? Witchy Quakers & Religious Magic

@sarajolena joins us on this episode to discuss religion, epistomology (meaning), colonization of earth and people, and magic, so hold onto your hijabs. We BARELY talked about HP on this episode, and instead focused on what animism, or "magic," can mean to people who profess deep religious faith. It may give some of us more to chew on than we first imagined.Furthermore, to have Sara Jolena describe herself as "witchy" Quaker was a very educational conversation, basically Uzma's nerdy HP dreams come true. We invite you to listen to the magical/spiritual work of motherhood. There is a lot to learn about our own biases against each other and against the earth. Tune in at 6pm EST om Apple podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, or head over to our website and check out Sara Jolena's website for great info and resources.Links:Follow Rev. SERIES: Islamic Parenting Styles: Muslim Parenting Styles Part I

Noha Alshugairi, MS, LMFT and co-author of Positive Parenting in the Muslim Home, joins us today to be thanked for writing THE manual on Muslim American parenting we needed. Just kidding! Even she says that's not what it is, but it IS the text that gave us hope that there were other moms out there who knew our struggles and would help lighten them. On this episode, Khala Noha covers the role positive discipline plays in shaping emotionally resilient kids. What are the most common concerns that Muslim parents bring her, what cultural influences help or hinder Muslim families, and why must our kids fail? That last one really begs the question about why we parents are so afraid of failure. All this, and more, in store for our listeners. You might be surprised to learn what this therapist's beliefs and practices are about therapy and who should be doing it. What won't surprise you is her commitment to the spiritual development of Muslim parents and their kids. Empty Nesting With Tawakkul

As mothers, we spend years nurturing, guiding, and preparing our children to take flight. And then one day, they do. The once chaotic household grows quiet, and we're left standing in the wake of their departure. It’s a moment we always knew would come, but it doesn't make the transition any less complex. This week's episode dives deep into the feelings of an "empty nest" and challenges the idea of loss by reframing it as an opportunity for growth and reinvention—for both us and our children. Are we "empty" when our children leave, or are we setting them free to soar, to become who we raised them to be? The truth is, their independence is a reflection of our success as mothers. Every milestone they achieve, every risk they take, is proof that we've equipped them with the tools they need to navigate the world on their own terms. But this transition is also about us. We aren't just mothers—we are individuals who deserve to rediscover ourselves beyond the role we've played for so long. This is a chapter where we get to ask, "Who am I now?" and "What do I want to do?" It's not about losing ourselves; it's about reclaiming and redefining our identities. From exploring new passions to reconnecting with our dreams, this stage of life is as much about *our* growth as it is theirs.Tune in as we explore the bittersweet emotions of watching our children fly the nest and how we can embrace this season of transformation with grace, strength, and a little self-discovery. Whether you're on the brink of an empty nest or already navigating this new space, this conversation is for you. 💖👉 Listen now wherever you get your podcasts. SERIES: Phases of the Mom: Becoming Mommy Muslim Matrescence

There’s a lot to say about “mothers’ status” in Islam, but sadly, not enough about how to support her to maintain and thrive there. It’s hella lonely and confusing on these pedestals. We aren’t looking for trophies, just Jannah (heaven), but some of us get lost along the way.Good news! There’s a whole field of study about it! Matrescence, the developmental transition into motherhood, is both spiritual AND practical for Muslims. There’s no other way we know how to do things, but we weren’t always here. It took a long way, through a lot of parenting potholes and pitfalls to get where we are, and we aren’t done yet. Replay: Childhood Sexual Abuse with Buddy Speaks

Trigger warning! This episode is NOT meant to be heard by children unless our mom audience feels they're ready for it. If you're a survivor of any sexual trauma, as a child or as an adult, you may not be ready for it either, so gauge your ability to revisit the past. We are here for you either way. If you need resources to deal with PTSD due to a history of abuse, we have links for you in the shownotes, and we are always just a DM/PM or email away. This episode IS meant to prepare us to hear the hard truths about child sex abuse, such as our personal experiences with it, how pervasive it is, and also new things, like how subversive it can be. Learn about grooming, disclosure, even forgivenesss, and how to be the safety net our kids need in the event that the worst should happen; may Allah SWT protect them all always. Ameen. Shariea Shoatz and our team made ourselves incredibly vulnerable in this episode because we trust our Muslim and non Muslim mom sisters to receive these hard truths in love and compassion, and to offer those in turn to themselves, as well as to their children. We are not alone in this. ... Sexual abuse doesn't happen because we are Americans and that's "this culture." NO! Sexual abuse doesn't monopolize any one country or society. Many cultures within and without the US have to deal with it, but we have the opportunity to dive deep into this difficult topic and figure out how to prevent and treat it. Mommying means rolling up our sleeves for the sake of the kids and our God-given duty to protect them at all costs.Shariea Shoatz is on the money when she says education is the best prevention, so that's where most of this conversation will be. Creating the Lives We Want

Our guest this week is, Marena Riyad, comedienne, creative, crafter, community builder, and crash courser in life. We got some learning today! From kidnapping to "it takes a village" to "be A LOT uncomfortable" to get where we want to go in life, we found a lot of Marena's talking points really hit home. Young wisdom is so very humbling, especially when it clearly demonstrates how to reconcile immigrant histories and write our own chapters in them. What does that look like when we grow up with stalwart models of resilience and sacrifice? It often means inheriting a strong work ethic and failure-is-not-an-option gameplan, but there is a room to follow our north stars. Marena demonstrates this beautifully. Whether you're an immigrant, a child of immigrants, or someone striving to make their mark in the world, this episode will resonate. Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, or head to our website landing page for a compelling discussion on ambition, resilience, and the beauty of crafting a life that reflects both where we come from and where we're going.Links:Marena Riyad on the Web: https://www.kufiyacomedytx.com/Marena Riyad on IG: @thehausofhenna Did you know you can send us a text? Mom Made in Palestine

Today’s guest, Morgan Cooper @mashjar_juthour, has lived and breathed Palestine for over two decades and is online telling Americans what her experiences have been as a Christian human in the land. She’s witnessed the DAILY government apartheid and violence against indigenous people and hasn’t been shy to speak up, a warrior mom to Palestinian children being raised on their historical land. Your heart will swell with pride, and break when she shares what she has to teach her kids to be safe there. In this episode, you’ll note us trying not to say “West Bank,” given what she’s has taught us about the language of colonization and violence. Morgan is a mom and environmental activist, preserving Palestinian land and culture in the ways she knows how: by raising proud Palestinian children, and supporting local female artisans so that the crafts of the land can recruit hearts outside of it. Handmade Palestine has been her passion project for almost a decade and through it, we can help support indigenous mothers and their liberation. Her message to Gazan mothers, well, another tearjerker. We thought about splitting this into two episodes, but it just couldn’t be done because of the efforts we had to let everyone know about on the ground to help Palestinian moms TODAY. So this may take the drive lines as well as your day’s errands to complete. For those out of school, it’s a good way to start a road trip, but we promise you’ll finish before you hit the next state.  Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, or head over to our website and take a listen, then share with ten friends who need to hear all about, and shop at, Handmade Palestine @handmadepalestine.Links:Follow Morgan on IG: @mashjar_juthourEmail Morgan for a farm stay: [email protected] Purchase Palestinians crafts from women led co-ops to support artisans and Mashjar: https://handmadepalestine.com/ Did you know you can send us a text? Gazan Mom Experiences

Fidaa Elaydi joins us today to share her personal experiences of Al Maghazi refugee camp in Gaza. A grandchild and child of Palestinian refugees to Gaza 76 years ago, she is four generations into a history of colonization and displacement, and now, genocide. As a mom of 4 herself, including a newborn, she has an acute perspective on mothers in Gaza today.Hear about her family, delivering babies in war, losing everything, trying to evacuate, trying to reunite, and now trying to survive an impending ground invasion on Rafah where they have been seeking shelter. Mothers for 8 months and 76 years have held onto surreal hopes in Palestine, and Gazans in particular have a special coping mechanism we wish we did, too.Tune in at 6pm EST to Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music or head to our website to take a listen.
