Los nanorrobots han dejado de ser materia exclusiva de la ciencia ficción para entrar de lleno en la ciencia, especialmente por sus aplicaciones en biomedicina. Hoy conversamos con Fernando Soto Álvarez, investigador en el Canary Center at Stanford for Cancer Early Detection, de los desarrollos más recientes de nanorrobots y nanomáquinas que están abriéndose camino con fuerza por sus posibles aplicaciones futuras. Existen nanomáquinas equipadas con partes móviles que pueden ser activadas mediante campos magnéticos externos, con ultrasonidos o con luz, para moverse entre los fluidos corporales, desplazarse hasta un destino concreto y liberar una carga química en un tumor. Otros dispositivos nanométricos se mueven mediante propulsión química gracias a pequeños motores que aprovechan la existencia de medios ácidos, como los del estómago, para generar movimiento. Y también existen los "nanobots", unos dispositivos híbridos formados por la unión entre un organismo biológico, una bacteria por ejemplo, y otro no biológico o generado mediante biología sintética creando una unidad que puede ser controlada y dirigida desde el exterior para transportar y liberar fármacos en lugares concretos.
