Navigating Senior Living Options: What Families Need to Know

from A Place for Seniors · host Allison Carman

In this episode of A Place for Seniors, we sit down with Laura Cohen, Executive Director and Owner of Bella Vita Senior Homes, a boutique residential care model serving families across the Valley since 2019. With three thoughtfully designed homes, Laura has created a care experience that prioritizes dignity, privacy, and truly personalized attention offering an alternative to large, institutional-style facilities.Laura’s journey into senior care began with a deeply personal experience—her mother. Coming from a background in mortgage and real estate, Laura understood the importance of making informed decisions. But when her mother needed care, she quickly realized something many families face: love alone isn’t enough. Providing safe, effective care requires training, structure, and the right environment. As she began researching options, Laura discovered how overwhelming the senior living landscape can be. While large-scale facilities may work for some, she knew they weren’t the right fit for her mom. The idea of navigating a 100+ resident community felt impersonal and unrealistic for her needs. That realization led Laura to a different path.Bella Vita Senior Homes was built on the belief that smaller environments create better outcomes. Each home is intentionally designed with just 10 residents, all with private rooms and bathrooms, allowing for a higher level of care, comfort, and connection. Residents aren’t just cared for—they are known, heard, and part of a close-knit community where meals are shared, relationships are built, and daily life feels meaningful.Throughout the episode, Laura speaks candidly about one of the most difficult parts of this journey—recognizing when a loved one needs help. As adult children, we often don’t see our parents as aging, making these decisions emotional and complex.Laura also shares her deep commitment to residents living with Parkinson’s disease. After noticing a growing need within her homes, she immersed herself in education and became actively involved with the Parkinson Foundation. Her hands-on, intentional approach ensures that residents receive not only care—but the right care tailored to their condition. At its core, Bella Vita is more than a senior living option, it’s a philosophy of care rooted in compassion, choice, and creating a true sense of home. This episode offers an honest, insightful look into navigating senior care decisions—and why finding the right environment can completely transform a loved one’s quality of life.At A Place for Seniors, we believe no family should have to navigate senior care alone.
