“What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, ‘Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well’ - but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.” James 2:14-17I think many people probably fall into one of two camps about James: it’s either one of their favorites or they bristle against it a little bit. This is because James does not pull any punches about what it means to live in a way that focuses and cares for other people. He says, “faith is dead without good works.” He says, “His actions made his faith complete.” He says, “I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” All of this is in the context of what James has to say about helping the poor, the widows and the orphans, and what he has to say about how we handle persecution and trials and what he has to say about how we speak. James is an in your face book in the best of ways.
