Doable Discipleship

“In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  2 Peter 1:5-8I’m going to start with something obvious. 2 Peter and Jude aren’t next to each other in the biblical order. So, why are these books so often linked? Wouldn’t it make more sense to do 1 Peter and 2 Peter together? Our guest today does well to explain why these letters are linked but I’ll spoil a little of it here because these letters hit hard on a similar theme: pursuing virtue. These are letters of encouragement - reminders to readers to be aware of false teachers and the trappings of the world and to focus steadfastly on the virtuous way of Christ. These letters are beautiful reminders of God’s love for you as you continue to, quoting Peter, “make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.” To help us navigate 2 Peter and Jude is Peter Davids, retired Professor of Christianity at Houston Baptist University while also have taught at Regent College, Trinity School, and Canadian Theological Seminary and is author of a commentary on 2 Peter and Jude. “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance - an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.” - 1 Peter 1:3-4After reading so many letters from Paul, a brief stop in Hebrews, and then a letter from James, we now get to hear from Peter. 1 Peter is a letter of hope - a letter of what it means to be called the family of God and to live that out. It’s a letter of what it means to be a Christian, particularly being a Christian in a time of suffering and persecution. It’s a letter about how to treat one another. It’s a letter about identity, being both living stones and humble sheep. This letter is only five chapters long but it paints a beautiful picture of the Christian life. “What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, ‘Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well’ - but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.” James 2:14-17I think many people probably fall into one of two camps about James: it’s either one of their favorites or they bristle against it a little bit. This is because James does not pull any punches about what it means to live in a way that focuses and cares for other people. He says, “faith is dead without good works.” He says, “His actions made his faith complete.” He says, “I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” All of this is in the context of what James has to say about helping the poor, the widows and the orphans, and what he has to say about how we handle persecution and trials and what he has to say about how we speak. James is an in your face book in the best of ways. “There were many priests under the old system, for death prevented them from remaining in office. But because Jesus lives forever, his priesthood lasts forever. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.” - Hebrews 7:23-25The book of Hebrews is an interesting first step out of Paul’s letters. In many ways, Hebrews may be even better read earlier in a New Testament reading because it has a heavy focus on Old Testament stories. “I appeal to you to show kindness to my child, Onesimus . . . I wanted you to help because you were willing, not because you were forced . . . He is no longer like a slave to you. He is more than a slave, for he is a beloved brother, especially to me. Now he will mean much more to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord.” Philemon vs. 10, 14, and 16. The book of Philemon is unlike any of Paul’s other letters. Or, perhaps I should say it this way, it is unlike any of Paul’s other full letters. We’ve seen Paul admonish or encourage specific people amidst some of his other letters, but here we have a standalone letter from Paul to Philemon asking him a favor regarding Philemon’s slave, Onesimus. This letter is important for many reasons as it teaches us from multiple different angles. What can we learn from what Paul is saying to Philemon? What can we learn from what Paul is saying about Onesimus? And what can we learn from how Paul says these things? “The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith. But some people have missed this whole point. They have turned away from these things and spend their time in meaningless discussions. They want to be known as teachers of the law of Moses, but they don’t know what they are talking about, even though they speak so confidently.” - 1 Timothy 1:5-71 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus are often called the Pastoral Epistles and it’s not too hard to see why. These are letters Paul is writing to his brothers in the faith, Timothy and Titus and right away you see they read differently than the other Pauline letters we’ve been focused on. In the previous letters, Paul was writing to churches - encouraging his church plants as they continue to grow and do ministry without him. In these letters, Paul is mentoring Timothy and Titus in a beautiful way as they minister and the truths he anchors in are still perfectly relevant to us today. “So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ.” - 2 Thessalonians 1:11-121 and 2 Thessalonians, besides being perhaps the hardest books to say, is a fascinating look at some of Paul’s earliest letters in his ministry journeys. For these letters, as we’ll see from our conversation today, context is highly important because Paul is writing to a new church, new Christians, living in Macedonia during the Roman empire. So as you read these letters, you see Paul showing love and care for a new congregation - answering questions and speaking to issues that were incredibly relevant to their context. But as we’ve said many times, these letters were written to that church, but they are still for us. So how do the themes Paul presents in these letters of remembering, persecution, encouragement, hope and more speak to the Thessalonians and for us? And what is to be done with 2 Thessalonians chapter 2 and the man of lawlessness? “So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.” - Colossians 1:9-10Colossians, to me, seems a bit like a hidden gem amongst the Epistles. It doesn’t have the heft of Romans or the well-known passages like Corinthians. It doesn’t seem to be as popular to read as Galatians, Ephesians or Philippians. It kind of feels like when you’re told we’re going to be studying Colossians it’s met with a . . . yay . . .. But when I went back into Colossians to prepare for this episode, I was surprised to see just how many notes and underlines and whatnot I had made the last time I went through the book. Pound for pound it might be my most underlined Epistle by percentage. Paul’s letter to the Colossians is focused on what it truly means to live in the new life - to live in the way of Christ. “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me - everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.” - Philippians 4:8-9I think Philippians has a special place in a lot of people’s hearts. This letter from Paul just tends to bring a smile to people. And I think that’s for a couple of reasons. One: it’s a book about joy. Paul mentions a few times to rejoice or that he rejoices and that talk about joy just tends to perk you up. Second: It’s a book of encouragement. Paul continuously points the readers back towards Christ and, in the NLT at least, the section heads include: “Paul’s Joy is that Christ is Preached,” “Have the Attitude of Christ,” “Shine Brightly for Christ,” and “The Priceless Value of Knowing Christ.” Pretty focused and encouraging if I do say so myself. “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:8-10Ephesians is, in my view, quite popular right now. There have been a number of new books out recently focused on Ephesians and I’ve seen many churches preaching on the book lately. I would say it as Ephesians is having a moment right now. So what is it about Ephesians that is drawing this attention lately? My guest and I discuss this question in this conversation, but it’s worth noting that Ephesians is about union with Christ, the power of the Spirit, growing in Christlikeness, and unity in the church. Ephesians is a remarkable letter highlighting so many truths for the church to continue to go back to again and again. “If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.  If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing.  If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:1-3Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians is perhaps best known as having the “love” chapter that I just read from. But it’s a testament to the weight of this book that in our conversation today, we barely even touch on that chapter. In this letter, Paul is responding to things he has heard were going on at the church he started in Corinth. Think of a pastor who planted a church, had to go away for awhile, but starts hearing about a bunch of issues happening back at his church plant and has to respond to them. Our guest today likes to say that while 1 Corinthians isn’t considered one of Paul’s “pastoral letters,” it may actually be his most pastoral as we see him handling the business of the church. Paul covers a lot of ground in this letter, from issues of leadership and authority to spiritual pride and sin in the church, from instructions on public worship to spiritual gifts and finally ending with a beautiful treatise on the resurrection of Christ. “Most people today imagine that the point of Christianity is ‘to go to heaven when you die.’ That’s what most believers believe. It’s what most unbelievers believe. They are all wrong. The point of Christianity is not that we should go to heaven. The point of Christianity is that heaven should come to us.” - God's HomecomingThis sentence is the opening of the new book, God’s Homecoming, by N.T. Wright. This central theme continues a message that Dr. Wright started sharing in Surprised By Hope and continues now with even more fervor and urgency as he focuses in on how understanding this message affects how we read the Bible. “What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?  Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?  Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself.  Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.” Romans 8:31-34N.T. Wright has called Romans “arguably one of the most extraordinary letters ever written by anyone” and I imagine most people would agree. Romans is the heavyweight of the New Testament - a beautiful and profound look at the gospel message of Christ wrapped up in one letter. From explaining the good news and teaching about God’s anger at sin, to highlighting God’s faithfulness and the centrality of the cross to focusing on righteousness and life in the spirit. Picking up pretty much where the Gospel of Luke left off, Acts follows Jesus commissioning the disciples right before his ascension, the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and then the birth of the church. It’s a book about mission - the mission to spread the good news of Jesus. It’s a book about diversity - the opening of the message to gentiles and the travels set forth by the apostles as they bring the message of Jesus to the world. It’s a book about power - not power as we may think about it but spiritual power. Known as the Spiritual Gospel, its messages, themes, and depiction of Jesus paint a beautifully rich picture of Jesus the Messiah. Matthew showed Jesus as Teacher, Mark should Jesus in action, Luke should Jesus as storyteller, and our guest today will explain how John shows Jesus as provocateur - yes you’ll hear a big laugh from me when he chooses this as the picture. “But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also. Do to others as you would like them to do to you.” - Luke 6:27-31The Gospel of Luke is a journey chronicling the earthly life of Jesus. It paints a pretty full picture of Jesus’ ministry while paying particular attention to the stories or parables that Jesus would tell. If Mark is the action Gospel, Luke is the story Gospel. The stories from Jesus you know and love are found in this Gospel, the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son and so on. But even through all of these stories and all of the movement that Jesus undertakes in this Gospel, Luke continues to put the focus on who - the storyteller, the traveler, Jesus the Messiah. “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it.” - Mark 8:34-35The Gospel of Mark reads like a propulsive novel or like an action movie. It even starts nearly right in the middle of the action, skipping the story of Jesus’ birth entirely. More than in the other gospels, in Mark Jesus is always on the move. The shortest of the Gospels coming in at 16 chapters, it’s a book of momentum but, in my opinion, there’s a reason for that. While in other Gospels you get long sermons from Jesus, this Gospel presents a focus on seeing Jesus through how he acted and interacted with others. And not all of those interactions go the way we would assume Jesus would handle them. As we look forward to diving into the New Testament together, we must acknowledge a kind of elephant in the room. Between Malachi, the end of the Old Testament, and the events starting the New Testament there is a 400-year gap. Sometimes referred to as “The Silent Period,” the Intertestamental Period is an important era to explore as a bridge between the Old and New Testaments because as my guest today will unpack, God was doing some serious work during this time. That guest today is Tom Holladay, former Teaching Pastor at Saddleback Church, host of the Drivetime Devotions podcast, and multiple-time guest on this podcast. In this conversation, Tom will help us see some of the ways God was at work during the Intertestamental Period that sets the stage for what was going to unfold in the New Testament and beyond. As a part of the Navigating the Bible series, one of the questions I always ask is “what does this book teach us about God.” The answer is almost always: a lot. The Old Testament is an invitation to look at the biggest question of the universe: who. That’s right, it’s not why - it’s who. As we read and study Scripture, we learn that the who is God - and he exists in three persons: The Father, the Son, and the Spirit. As I was thinking about how to put a bow on our time navigating through the Old Testament, I thought about a trilogy of books by Dr. Christopher Wright: Knowing God the Father through the Old Testament, Knowing Jesus Through the Old Testament, and Knowing the Holy Spirit Through the Old Testament. These three are now presented in a single volume called Knowing God Through the Old Testament and I thought, what a perfect way to capstone this series by focusing on how we can know God through the Old Testament. So my guest today is Dr. Christopher Wright, International Ministries Director for the Langham Partnership and author of many books and commentaries. Then those who feared the Lord spoke with each other, and the Lord listened to what they said. In his presence, a scroll of remembrance was written to record the names of those who feared him and always thought about the honor of his name.17 “They will be my people,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “On the day when I act in judgment, they will be my own special treasure. I will spare them as a father spares an obedient child. 18 Then you will again see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.” - Malachi 3:16-18The book of Malachi, the final book of the Old Testament, is incredibly special. Yes, all books of the Bible are special, but after this conversation I will say Malachi now has a special place in my heart. Only four chapters, so quite a bit different than Zechariah, Malachi is a book focused on relationship between God and his people. It’s a book about his love. It’s a book about our sin. It’s a book that should bring up a lot of self-reflective questions as you read it but is anchored in the truth of God’s love for you and his promise of mercy. There’s a lot to unpack in Malachi and to help us do it is Dr. Peter Adam, former principal of Ridley Theological College in Melbourne and author of The Message of Malachi. “Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey - riding on a donkey’s colt.” - Zechariah 9:9In my opinion, Zechariah is a diamond of a book. It has so many facets, so many ways to approach it and points of emphasis and things to teach. Last week we talked about Haggai and Zechariah is a partner book - we are still in the post-exilic period talking about rebuilding the temple. But Zechariah covers a lot of ground. It talks about returning to the Lord. There are chapters of visions we haven’t really seen the like of since Daniel and Ezekiel. There are calls to justice and mercy, promises of blessings and a beautiful look ahead to the coming Messiah and the second advent still to come. As I said, this is an incredibly rich, multifaceted book. “Then the Lord sent this message through the prophet Haggai: ‘Why are you living in luxurious houses while my house lies in ruins? This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Look at what’s happening to you! You have planted much but harvest little. You eat but are not satisfied. You drink but are still thirsty. You put on clothes but cannot keep warm. Your wages disappear as though you were putting them in pockets filled with holes.’” - Haggai 1:3-6The book of Haggai is a bit of a jump back to the books of Ezra and Nehemiah and refocuses in on the temple. At its heart, this is a book about priorities. As the passage I just read says, “Why are you living in luxurious houses while my house lies in ruins?” God is using the prophet Haggai to call out hypocrisy, to call out wayward hearts but lo and behold, what happens? The people listen and we get to see God’s response to their obedience. Haggai is not the longest book by any means, but there’s a lot in it to unpack. What sorrow awaits rebellious, polluted Jerusalem, the city of violence and crime! No one can tell it anything; it refuses all correction. It does not trust in the Lord or draw near to its God. Its leaders are like roaring lions hunting for their victims. Its judges are like ravenous wolves at evening time, who by dawn have left no trace of their prey. Its prophets are arrogant liars seeking their own gain. Its priests defile the Temple by disobeying God’s instructions. But the Lord is still there in the city, and he does no wrong. Day by day he hands down justice, and he does not fail. - Zephaniah 3:1-5The book of Zephaniah, while being another in the line of prophets sharing God’s message of judgment and repentance, deserves more time and attention than what we tend to give it. Only three chapters long, God’s message through Zephaniah is a direct yet beautiful encapsulation of the themes we’ve seen so often in the prophets. It’s a book about humility and unity. It’s a book about repentance and turning hearts towards God. It’s a book about God’s judgment against oppressors, poor leaders, and idolatry. It’s a book about the coming of the Lord and the God who not only saves, but will live among his people. “What good is an idol carved by man, or a cast image that deceives you? How foolish to trust in your own creation - a god that can’t even talk! What sorrow awaits you who say to wooden idols, ‘Wake up and save us!’ To speechless stone images you say, ‘Rise up and teach us!’ Can an idol tell you what to do? They may be overlaid with gold and silver, but they are lifeless inside. But the Lord is in his holy Temple. Let all the earth be silent before him.” - Habakkuk 2:18-20The book of Habakkuk is quite unlike any others in the canon of the prophets. Instead of the book being a message that God has given a prophet to share with a nation, Habakkuk is a conversation between Habakkuk and God. The book is structured: “Habakkuk’s first complaint”, “The Lord’s Reply.” “Habakkuk’s second complaint”, “The Lord’s Second Reply”, “Habakkuk’s Prayer.” The themes in this book are not unlike the themes from other prophet books, but the way in which they are explored is very different and what this book teaches us about how we can approach God and the vantage point God has provides a deep and rich look into the character of God. “The Lord is a jealous God, filled with vengeance and rage. He takes revenge on all who oppose him and continues to rage against his enemies! The Lord is slow to get angry, but his power is great, and he never lets the guilty go unpunished.” - Nahum 1:2-3The book of Nahum, the 34th book of the Old Testament, is somewhat a companion to Jonah. When we read Jonah, we saw God send Jonah to Nineveh to repent of their ways and, what do you know, they did! Well Nahum picks up a little while later and we see Nineveh has gone back to their old ways and Nahum is now foretelling God's judgment on Assyria and its capitol, Nineveh. Nahum isn’t long, it’s only three chapters, so you may be wondering, “How on earth is this episode on Nahum an hour and twenty minutes long?” Don’t let Nahum’s length fool you - it is an incredibly rich portrait of who God is and, specifically, his relationship to evil. “Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant overlooking the sins of his special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing unfailing love.” Micah 7:18The book of Micah may not be the most well-known of the Old Testament, but it has some of the most well-known verses and passages. Micah takes on the same challenge as many of the other prophets - sharing God’s message of both judgment and hope. What makes this book unique, however, is the pointedness of his message. He calls out wealthy oppressors and false prophets. He calls out corrupt leaders and how the corruption of the leaders has infected the citizens. His judgment is pointed, but so is his message of restoration and hope. The famous passage from Micah 6:8 says, “The Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”  Micah has a message that continues to resonate today, and to help us navigate this book is Dr. Sheri Klouda Sharp. “Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from inside the fish. He said, ‘I cried out to the Lord in my great trouble, and he answered me. Yet I will look once more toward your holy Temple.”’” Jonah 2:1-4The book of Jonah is without a doubt the most known book of the prophets and perhaps one of the most well known of the Old Testament. That is to say, most of the story is well known. From the earliest ages the story of Jonah and the fish or Jonah and the whale is taught in church classrooms around the world. But usually that story ends in chapter 2 . . . but there are still two more chapters to the book of Jonah and, you know what, the conversation today spends most of its time in chapter 4. “The Lord says to Edom, ‘I will cut you down to size among the nations; you will be greatly despised. You have been deceived by your own pride because you live in a rock fortress and make your home high in the mountains. “Who can ever reach us way up here?” you ask boastfully. But even if you soar as high as eagles and build your nest among the stars, I will bring you crashing down,’ says the Lord.” - Obadiah 1:2-4Obadiah is the shortest book of the Old Testament. Standing at one chapter, 21 verses, it’s a quick yet pointed announcement of judgment against the land of Edom. While the book is short, it didn’t stop my guest and me from talking about it for nearly 45 minutes. Obadiah has a lot to teach us on what God is judging Edom about, while also warning us what to be on the lookout for in our own lives. It’s a book about the results of pride, violence, and apathy. “Do what is good and run from evil so that you may live! Then the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies will be your helper, just as you have claimed. Hate evil and love what is good; turn your courts into true halls of justice. Perhaps even yet the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies will have mercy on the remnant of his people.” - Amos 5:14-15The book of Amos has a bit of a reputation. It’s not known for being the most fun of the minor prophets. It doesn’t pop up in many sermons, you don’t see many Bible studies focused on it. There are many reasons why this is the case. Amos is a harsh book - he doesn’t hold back on what he has to say. In chapter 8 it says, “The Lord said, ‘Like this fruit, Israel is ripe for punishment! I will not delay their punishment again. In that day the singing in the Temple will turn to wailing. Dead bodies will be scattered everywhere. They will be carried out of the city in silence.’” Again . . . not the most fun read. However, the true heart of the book of Amos is an incredibly important message about how you view God. It’s a book about justice. It’s a book about repentance. It’s a book about the true heart of worship. To help us navigate the book of Amos is Dr. Danny Carroll, Scripture Press Ministries Professor of Biblical Studies at Wheaton College. Danny has studied, taught, and written about Amos for decades, including writing some commentaries on the book. We’ve been walking through this series on Navigating the Bible we're currently neck deep in talking about the Prophets. These books can be extraordinarily beautiful, but they can also be confusing and hard to read. As a brief pause in our series, I thought today might be good to rewind a conversation I had last year with Dr. John Walton about the prophets as a whole. Dr. Walton is professor of Old Testament Emeritus at Wheaton College and author of around 32 books including The Lost World of the Prophets. “The church is a multiethnic and multicultural assembly of believers spanning history that God has called into fellowship with Christ and with one another. We gather regularly to consider the teachings of the Bible and to orient our lives around God’s coming kingdom. Together we wait for God to make all things new, and we bear witness to the world of what God has already done.” - Becoming God’s FamilyWhat is the purpose of the church? If you talked with different people you’d likely get different answers. You might hear that it’s a place to worship God. You might hear that it’s just a place people go to feel better about their lives. There’s a broader conversation happening about whether or not the church still matters. “The act of confessing our sins to one another is a graced invitation to practice the way of faith, hope, and love. The soul tempted to despair will be particularly allergic to ecclesial confession, but it is here that they will find great remedy for their agonizing condition. For in confessing their sins to one another, they are heard with the faith of fellow saints, they are encouraged by the hope of fellow pilgrims, and they are loved with the charity of brothers and sisters.” - Pastoral ConfessionsConfession is not an easy topic - but it is a healthy topic. Oftentimes when the topic of confession is brought up, it’s met with one of two responses: 1. "My walls are now up and I’m tuning out what is being talked about." 2. "This is so true and important and a lot of other people have things to confess." But like I said, confession is healthy. And even more than that, confession is necessary. Now I may be biased, but one of the best books on confession releases one week from today - Pastoral Confessions written by my friend Jamin Goggin. Jamin has been on this podcast a few times in the past. He’s an associate professor at Talbot School of Theology, Director of the Healthy Pastor Initiative for Finishing the Task, and one of the most thoughtful theologians I know. In today’s conversation Jamin and I talk about what led him to write about confession, the real human struggles with sin and confession, some ways we can more normalize confession, and much more. “That is why the Lord says, ‘Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.’ Return to the Lord for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.” Joel 2:12-13The book of Joel, the second of the minor prophets, is such a beautiful book. It’s not long, only three chapters, but packs quite a spiritual punch. It tells of a locust swarm. It tells of a call to repentance and what it means to rejoice in the Lord. It tells of the promise of the Spirit of the Lord. It tells of God’s judgment against enemy nations and blessings for God’s people. Joel is surely a book that, even though it might not be the most taught-through, has a lot of recognizable truths. To help us navigate the book of Joel is Dr. David Baker. “O Israel and Judah, what should I do with you?” asks the Lord. “For your love vanishes like the morning mist and disappears like dew in the sunlight. I sent my prophets to cut you to pieces - to slaughter you with my words, with judgments as inescapable as light. I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings. But like Adam, you broke my covenant and betrayed my trust.” - Hosea 6:4-7We’re getting deeper into the prophets now as we’ve moved from what are considered the major prophets to the minor prophets. Now don’t let these terms color your view of these next books - the minor prophets have a lot to say. In fact, this conversation on Hosea has been one of my favorites. Honestly, I had not spent much time in Hosea before but man did re-reading it and spending time prepping for this conversation really impact me. Hosea is, yes, another prophet trying to warn Israel of the coming judgment of the Lord, but the approach Hosea takes hits home in a fresh way. It is a book of variation: there are perfectly understandable and well-known stories, but there are also visions and dreams and angels and hands writing on walls. There is some truly crazy stuff in the book of Daniel, but at its heart Daniel is a book about the kingdom of God, the faithfulness of God, and the providence of God. “The next generation will live into the words we speak over them, so we should consider what words we are speaking over Gen Z. We, older generations, are responsible for raising, stewarding, and discipling the next generation, and right now, they are hearing from us, “We don’t like you.” - An excerpt from What Gen Z Really Wants to Know About God. We’re in a bit of a tale as old as time moment. There is a lot of discussion about Gen Z - and a lot of it negative. Honestly this seems like a not uncommon issue where older generations speak negatively about younger generations, but there is something that does seem different about the conversation surrounding Gen Z. Gen Z is considered the first digital native generation and there is data to show a decline in church engagement in Gen Z. As I read from the excerpt earlier, there is a narrative in place that Gen Z is lazy, difficult, and weak. But what if we flipped the narrative? What if we approached Gen Z with hope and optimism, maybe even appreciation for what we can learn from them? Gen Z isn’t just the future of the church, it’s the church today so how can we think of and approach Gen Z differently than the prevailing narratives. My guest today is Dr. Tanita Maddox, national director at Young Life and author of the new book What Gen Z Really Wants to Know About God. “As Scripture reveals, the kind of wisdom we drink in ultimately guides our choices. It conditions our thoughts and molds our character and habits to become who we are. It influences the longings and desires of our heart and the ways we seek to find meaning. The right question then becomes, what kind of wisdom are we currently being guided by?” - An excerpt from The Man You’re Meant to Be. There’s a lot of talk lately about men and manhood. The rise of the so-called "manosphere" is a major factor in this. As we’ve talked about before, social media and podcasts and other forms of media are can be so specific as ecosystems that it’s easier than ever to be fed almost exclusively however you want to - like going to a Cheesecake Factory but choosing to only get the same thing repeatedly. Now that’s not necessarily a bad thing - the choice you make can be delicious and you can enjoy it every day. But . . . it can also mean that you’re only being fed by one source and that can and will begin to shape you. What you intake (what you watch or listen to) can and will shape your worldview. This is a major part of the manhood conversation and a part of the new book The Man You’re Meant to Be by my friend John Simons. “So now, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will end the captivity of my people; I will have mercy on all Israel, for I jealously guard my hold reputation! They will accept responsibility for their past shame and unfaithfulness after they come home to live in peace in their own land, with no one to bother them. When I bring them home from the lands of their enemies, I will display my holiness among them for all the nations to see. Then my people will know that I am the Lord their God, because I sent them away to exile and brought them home again.” - Ezekiel 39:25-28My guest today has previously started his teaching on Ezekiel this way: “Why in the world would anybody want to read Ezekiel let alone study this unbelievable and incomprehensible book?” When I heard this - I immediately knew he was the guy I wanted to help us navigate this book. Ezekiel is a diamond in the rough in the canon of the prophets. It’s message is similar to the prophets we’ve read already, Isaiah and Jeremiah, but with an element we hadn’t quite seen before. Right away in chapter 1 Ezekiel says, “From the center of the cloud came four living beings that looked human, except that each had four faces and four wings.” Again - this is chapter 1. We’re clearly off to something a little different with Ezekiel. And there’s nobody better to help us navigate this different book than Dr. Daniel Block. Dan is the Gunther H. Knoedler Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Wheaton College and wrote a commentary on Ezekiel in 1998 that is still considered the gold standard commentary on Ezekiel. “Joy has left our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. The garlands have fallen from our heads. Weep for us because we have sinned. Our hearts are sick and weary, and our eyes grow dim with tears. For Jerusalem is empty and desolate, a place haunted by jackals. But Lord, you remain the same forever! Your throne continues from generation to generation.” Lamentations 5: 15-19The book of Lamentations picks up right where Jeremiah left off. Jerusalem has fallen and the prophet Jeremiah is left weeping at what has occurred. Lamentations, though not necessarily easy to read, is a beautiful book showing the heart of a man so burdened with grief for the choices that the people of Jerusalem had made. It’s also a picture of God’s heart, grieving for his chosen people to return to him. But like the book of Jeremiah, Lamentations is not without hope. We are treated to a beautiful reminder of the faithfulness of God and that hope continues to rest in him and him alone. “Why do some of us experience Christianity as a burden and others as a refuge? The answer, I am convinced, has to do with grace. Grace is the Big Relief at the heart of Christianity. “But this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I will certainly bring my people back again from all the countries where I will scatter them in my fury. I will bring them back to this very city and let them live in peace and safety. They will be my people, and I will be their God. And I will give them one heart and one purpose: to worship me forever, for their own good and for the good of all their descendants. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good for them. I will put a desire in their hearts to worship me, and they will never leave me. I will find joy doing good for them and will faithfully and wholeheartedly replant them in this land. - Jeremiah 32:37-41Jeremiah is a book not for the faint of heart. It’s a big book, 52 chapters and with a greater word count than any other book in the Bible. It’s a troubling book - the warnings from a prophet of God telling people what is going to befall them if they don’t repent and turn back to the God of their ancestors. It’s a sad book as it tells of the destruction of Jerusalem. There’s no doubt, Jeremiah is a behemoth of an Old Testament book. But, it’s not a book to ignore by any means. At its heart, even with the difficult things in the book, Jeremiah is still a book about hope. It’s still a book about the faithfulness of God. The passage I read at the beginning from Jeremiah 32 makes that clear. We learn so much about God in this book - it’s truly a rich, theological text. I think we’d probably all agree that digital distraction is at an all time high. News from around the world is at our fingertips at a moment's notice. We get real-time updates on, well, everything. We can play any sort of game imaginable anywhere in the world and we can post our own thoughts and musings for anybody to see. Smartphones are truly an incredible innovation, but they come with a cost. Instead of engaging with the world right around us, we engage in a digital world filled with avatars and algorithms. Instead of looking up to God or out to the people directly in front of us, we look down into the screen of a metal rectangle. “Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars? He brings them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name. Because of his great power and incomparable strength, not a single one is missing. O Jacob, how can you say the Lord does not see your troubles? O Israel, how can you say God ignores your rights? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth.” Isaiah 40:26-28As we enter the book of Isaiah, we are moving from the wisdom literature into the prophets. In many ways it’s a good thing that Isaiah is the first of the major prophets we read because it’s the most accessible. Isaiah paints a portrait, not just of Israelite history, but of the God who is above it all - the God who is both creator and master of all things, but also close, loving and kind. Isaiah is a long book coming in at 66 chapters, but it is rich with history, the character of God, and hope for the savior that is to come. They get more agile and increase endurance by running and doing sprints. They develop muscle memory by practicing their sport and certain moves over and over and over again. All of this is in pursuit of being ready for the competition – ready for game day. As Christians, we have our own exercises – we call them spiritual practices. We grow stronger in our faith through reading Scripture. We grow more agile and increase endurance through fasting and silence and solitude. We develop muscle memory through gratitude.
